Sephiroth having the petting animation even though he was never supposed to be in a situation where he'd need it makes me FEEL things because it kind of mirrors his real situation... He was never supposed to have compassion or kindness, because ShinRa, who "designed" him never intended for him to be in a situation where he'd need those either, but he still has them!

One of my legit favorite things about sane!Sephiroth is the fact that, despite his cruel upbringing and seemingly love-barren environment, he still proves himself to be human with his innate compassion and sense of righteousness. He doesn’t let his own deficits in the compassion department affect how he treats others—nor does he weaponize his background and use it as an excuse to tear others down around him. There’s so many canonical examples of Sephiroth protecting others (saving Zack from Ifrit), expressing his loyalty (refusing to harm Genesis & Angeal), and going out of his way to right his own wrongs (immediately offering to donate blood when Genesis is in need of a transfusion). ShinRa may have wanted a soulless, emotionless, robotic beast of a SOLDIER, but the human blood in that fella ultimately eclipsed all else. And what they got instead was a man worthy of wielding the title of SOLDIER’s very finest, because Sephiroth really was a hero, in my opinion, until the very moment he lost what made him so human.
