Scene: Whumpee wakes up in the hospital and meets Caretaker.
Whumpee woke up in a strange white room that was brightly lit. There was low murmuring sounding as if deep underwater as people dressed in white worked around them.
They didn't know where they were, Whumper typically dressed in black and it was strange to be around others as Whumper didn't allow them to be seen by anyone, but Whumpee couldn't distinguish which one of these strangers was Whumper in hiding.
And Whumper had to be in hiding. Everyone in the room dressed in the same white, with varying colors underneath, but there was no way Whumper would let anyone help them unless they were present in the room too.
Voice hoarse and breaking, Whumpee tried to talk but only garbled gibberish came out as needles were poked and one of the people in white tried to put a mask over Whumpee's face.
"It's an oxygen mask, it will help you breathe easier while we treat your injuries."
The one trying to wrestle the mask on said, pausing and trying to be patient with the scared Whumpee. Their voice was a little more clearer due to how much closer they were and when Whumpee didn't garble out any more words of protests the white clothed stranger fixed the oxygen mask in place and rejoined the others in cleaning and binding their wounds.
It wasn't long before Whumpee lost consciousness again.
--
The next time Whumpee woke they were alone in their brightly lit room, the machines on either side of them beeping.
Looking around and taking in the surrounding Whumpee realized they were in a hospital room, one of the emergency rooms by the way there was constant traffic of nurses going back and forth with one occasionally popping in to check the machines before leaving again.
Whumpee pretended to be asleep when they came in. They didn't know if the nurses were with Whumper, or where Caretaker was for that matter.
Were they really safe? Was Whumper in the waiting room or Caretaker?
Either way they needed to get out of here. Whumpee was covered head to toe in varying sized cuts, one of them was infected and they could feel it in their body.
They way it ached, the way their energy was drained and lethargic no matter how much sleep Whumpee got, and the pain. The kind that went beyond aching, it was the kind that burned and pulsed with each heartbeat.
Aside from that all they could feel was the need to run, to escape and hide. Whumper could easily find them in a hospital if they weren't the one to bring them in to begin with.
Information. Whumpee needed information first.
As the nurse came in for the next round of vitals and meds, Whumpee didn't pretend to sleep this time and the nurse blinked and gasped in realization.
"You're awake! The doctor will want to talk to you, just a minute!"
Whumpee almost barked out a laugh, almost, after all where else were they going to go?
"Glad to see you conscious Whumpee, my name is Caretaker and I have been overseeing your care here. Do you know where you are?" The doctor took quick vitals as Whumpee licked their too dry lips and tried to respond.
"The..hospital?"
"That's right, you are lucky Whumpee. You're boyfriend is in the waiting room, has been all night, it was a good thing they found you out in those woods before the coyotes finished you off."
"N-no! Nonono....boyfriend! N-no coyotes..." Whumpee struggled to sit up, looking wildly about the room as they hoarsely whispered the information to Caretaker hoping beyond hope they understood.
Without a second thought Caretaker went over to the phone hooked on the wall and dialed a few numbers and spoke quickly into the mouthpiece. They spoke quietly so Whumpee couldn't make out what was being said and that scared them more.
Their body still burned with fever from the infection, the cuts, both small and large, ached in tune with every heartbeat. As Whumpee looked down at their exposed arm to allow the doctors access for the IV, they saw the cuts were made to look very much like claw marks and if Whumpee hadn't screamed and cried during the whole ordeal they would have believed that's what they were too.
"Whumpee?" Caretaker gently prompted them out of their assessment of their body's injuries. Once Whumpee had refocused back on them Caretaker continued. "Hospital security is escorting Whumper out and I have a nurse preparing a new room for you. I'm going to take you there now. I want you know that you will be safe and hidden here while you recover Whumpee, I will see to it personally. You have my word."
"Whumper...sn-sneak in?"
"They won't be able to as security and the police are already aware of them now. The police are on their way to arrest Whumper and meet Security outside when they escort him out." Caretaker began to unplug them from the various machines but left the IV in.
"And if they somehow manage to get back in they won't know which room you are in. We will leave you're name off the door and give you a number for the nurses to know you by. That will keep you're identity safe."
Looking down at the feverish Whumpee as they rolled the bed out of the room along with the IV, Caretaker reiterated. "Do you hear me, Whumpee? You are safe here. I won't let them hurt you again."
Whumpee's eyes watered, mixed with pain and relief as Caretaker's words slowly registered to them.
"Tha-Thank you..."
