1960's Beatnik Glossary

Jello Biafra (nee Eric Boucher) head of Dead Kennedys rock band, visiting New York after obscenity trial (won by hung jury) over art illustrations to his "Frankenchrist" album. "Nazi Punks Fuck Off," "Too Drunk to Fuck," and "White Punks on Dope" were early underground hits late 1970's. He was on tour, lecturing on Reagan-era censorship moves, here "rebounding from the want-ads, surprised scrutinized by Candid surveillance camera," his briefcase open in small bedroom, pens clipped to strap, old backstage tour passes posted inside. Recovering from flu, late night tea, October 6, 1987.

The Origami Girl

I’d say, call me Nadine,

An origami girl, blowing in the winds of a mother’s wrath,

A crumpled up bill, forgotten by a father

Who never cared for fading colours,

But my name is Jones.

They call me Jones,

Like the electric blue soda pops

Sealed with fortunes

And promises of false prosperity.

They call me Jones

So a paper crane may flee from he who

Frightens soul mates with bloody liquor 

Instead of baseball bats and rubber boots,

Hogging all the damn vigor.

I like the Jones persona

But in her cave, Nadine snores,

Emanating vitality, berating omens;

And still, I smell dad’s tobacco spit

When frigid rains ruin sunny skies,

Coercing carmine red writings

To drip down white walls,

Seeking her presence,

Bringing her back.
