My one year late take on the whole Lychee and Rambutan shipping thing is that putting aside whether or not you should ship people who consider each other to be siblings, there was a lot of moments between the two that wound up coming across as romantic so... I can't really blame people for viewing their relationship in a romantic lens with that in mind.
