Sufficient Unto the Day (A Quiet Place)

Marcus had been quieter than usual that night at dinner. When Regan signed a question to him, his response was clumsy and small and indistinct: the ASL equivalent of mumbling. Evelyn reached over and put her hand over his. He looked up at her.

Are you ok? she signed. I haven’t had to hide the potatoes. You must be sick.

He smiled a little at her joke, but then dropped his eyes to his plate. Sore throat, he signed. More water? He looked up hopefully.

She refilled his glass and brushed his curly hair back from his forehead, letting her hand linger. He was warm, but not worryingly so. She made eye contact with Lee and shook her head slightly.

He’s fine, she signed, her hands by her plate so as not to be overseen by the other children.

Lee inclined his head, asking for confirmation with his puffy basset hound eyes. She smiled back reassuringly and turned to Beau, who was making a mess of his meat again.
