Monthly rambling in 3 2 1...

Hey friends!

It’s 4 am here, and I’m definitely running late (and more than a little exhausted), so I’ll keep this short. Please make sure to read the devlog for all the changes in this update! There’s less new material than I would have liked, but this month has been absolutely insane.

Also, don’t forget that the new roadmap drops on February 2nd. There will be one announcement for everyone, and another one specifically for After Dark readers, so don’t miss it!

DEVLOG

Added missing journal logs to the notes.

The phone battery now drains slightly each day, even if it’s not used.

Fixed a bug that prevented talking about smoking with Kay.

Fixed a recursive dialogue bug involving Max.

Fixed some wording, typos, and spacing issues.

There is still a bug where the backpack sometimes doesn’t properly count weight when adding new food items, but I’m working on it!

The notebook is not finished yet, sorry. Working on it, though.

The card game still needs work, but for now it has been enabled for Kay as well.

THE EKANOX: A CITY OF ORGANS / MARROWS FULL LORE IS UNDER CUT!! SPEEDPAINT HERE Over the six thousand years that followed the arrival of the great beast, the Ekanox, the Earth had begun to change. The Ekanox roamed the outer crust of the planet, and as a result, what existed before had been buried beneath miles of flesh and organic material. Oceans replaced with blood. Rivers flowed with bile and filth. Humanity died. All that remained was a spherical corpse, the mindscape of the Ekanox now whispered upon the world. The Ekanox did not transform this planet with energy, rather, it’s mere existence was what changed the planet. What came with the Ekanox’s influence was a new, fleshy substance known as the “ekaris”. Ekaris is an organic flesh-material that mimics human DNA that is tethered to the metaphysical influence of the Ekanox and it grows relentlessly like a fungus.

some recent worldbuilding art for "THE EKANOX" ! i've been wanting to revisit my old concept art since a lot of it is over three years old and my art has improved a lot since then. not only that, i've since had a more solid vision for how i want to portray the world of the ekanox both in terms of narrative and environmentally. so, as i work through redrawing old art, why not start with the most iconic part of akuria: the marrows and cities of flesh!

The Ekanox did not transform this planet with exclusively energy, rather, it’s mere existence was what changed the planet. What came with the Ekanox’s influence was a new, fleshy substance known as the “ekaris”. Ekaris is an organic flesh-material that mimics human DNA that is tethered to the metaphysical influence of the Ekanox and it grows relentlessly like a fungus.

Flesh skyscrapers, better known as "marrows", are massive geometric structures of ekaris resembling man-made structures such as skyscrapers, buildings, and even old world vehicles. However, it should be noted that these structures have grown in complete independence upon previously existing structures. They form entirely on their own, a craft of the Ekanox’s subconscious. In better words, cities of marrow arise as a physical, real-world representation of the Ekanox’s mind.

Marrows grow spontaneously as the fleshy, unpurified landscape continues to expand day by day. Marrows have a solid internal structure that acts as a “skeleton”, with a mostly soft outer layer, resembling human skin and tendon. These sinew skyscrapers will collect residual parts, including local infected, which will then merge with the rest of the structure, making for the illusion of a city or town made from flesh. Marrows are usually completely solid, however, some may be hollow and will even possess levels, stairs, and windows as a normal building would. Marrows range from heights of twenty to two hundred feet in size, and taller. There is no definitive height when applied to marrows. Due to their organic nature, marrows may decay if no new matter is collected or growing across them.

Marrows are a natural beauty of the Dead Zone. Despite the different biomes and ecologies that dominate this now meat-covered world, marrows are present in almost every one. It should be noted that obelisks and marrows are not the same but are “related” biologically.

BONUS LORE: SEE THE MARROWS IN ACTION... THE CITY OF EMPIRIUS

Empirius is a massive city of flesh located in the center of the Nesting Grounds, surrounded by it’s own replica of the Blood Wall. Empirius is not grown over the rubble of a city, rather, it is a fleshy reconstruction of a cityscape; the Ekanox's perception on recreating man made structures from the remnants of decay scattered around the land. The massive skyscrapers and walls are made from stray ekaris and infected that homogenized with this living flesh. Some skyscrapers may have limbs, bones, teeth, organs, and other body parts protruding from them, though they are mostly just gargantuan monoliths of skin and meat. The air of Empirius is not entirely breathable due to the abundance of organic matter which attracts a variety of infections and viruses. While these are unrelated to the Pestilence, they thrive in the fleshy city that the Pestilence has grown. When travelling through Empirius, full body coverings and masks are required to safely make a trek across the organic landscape. Many avoid Empirius if possible. Other than being an ever growing mimic of man-made cities the most noticeable about the city of Empirius is how these vast, false skyscrapers seem to shift and move. The structure of the city and the placements of the skyscrapers are ever changing. Due to being a terrain made of live biologial matter, the flesh that covers the land of this vast city acts almost as if it is one whole organism, meaning that it moves and "breathes" like one as well.
