I wanted to break in my then-new grayscale markers, and she’s a beaut…the Gonzo adaptation has so many fascinating ideas, and Helena is probably my favorite character from that iteration; another True Vampire who provided Seras with a different kind of mentorship from Alucard...I do wish she’d stuck around a little longer!
Tess Larson is one of the most exuberant spirits to inhabit the gloomy haven that is Malaria...though, that doesn't always work in her favor. She works as Dr. Sonja Holzwurm's secretary, while dreaming of ways to improve the dismal climate of an otherwise progressive society. Her dewey-eyed enthusiasm--something that makes her a bit of a pariah in her circles--belies a shrewd sense of business and activism. She has recently fallen for Dr. Holzwurm's adoptive daughter, Jo, a fledgeling mad scientist in her own right, and the feeling there is mutual (despite the latter's lack of any outward enthusiasm).
I would pay to see a female Electra (Guess who had the SAME idea from the time she was 12...THIS CHICK, RIGHT HERE! From the time I heard Josie Aiello's interpretation on that 1987 highlights album, I was SOLD!). If they WERE going to go for that idea, what would your interpretation look like? Mine would be a kind of Grace Jones-esque-meets-mid-late-2000's Lady Gaga quality to her.
Well.... it just so happens that my final project at uni was exactly this :P Things did NOT go according to plan, especially the wig (which wasn’t part of my course, and a last-minute rush) but the basic ideas were to make her sleek, aerodynamic, elegant, less chunky and bulky than the masculine version. The chest box was the bit I was most proud of!
"And I saw it was filled with graves,
And tomb-stones where flowers should be:
And Priests in black gowns, were walking their rounds,
And binding with briars, my joys & desires."
"The Garden of Love" by William Blake
I'm slowly but surely redrawing some ancient fanart that I've been able to salvage. This particular drawing was drawn during my Yu Yu Hakusho phase (ages 14-15), and it was pretty obvious Kurama was my crush (I can appreciate his character even more now, as the most crafty and ruthless member of Team Urameshi, particularly in combat.)
The woman featured is supposed to be Maya Kitajima, the classmate featured in 'Two Shots,' a one-shot that details how Kurama met Hiei. Even back then, I found them an interesting pairing; Maya was an outgoing kid with a heightened spiritual sense, and I do wish she had stuck around a little longer. In the context of the artwork, I've always had a headcanon that they re-connect after the events of the story (also, she and Kuwabara would get along swimmingly...I dunno if it's the whole 'heightened spiritual awareness' thing, but it makes sense to me).
As for the artwork, I took it in an 'art nouveau' direction, because the initial sketch of Maya worked really well with that theory . The placement of the vines were inspired by the "Red Thread of Fate" theory, as their fates are joined. Originally, Maya held a calla lily, but I decided that the roses worked on their own.
Hey, kids! Here's a bright, shiny new fanart for ya!
Over the holiday break, I decided to do some healing of my inner child...I'm a millennial, so Yu-Gi-Oh was my jam in my tween years, so this lead to amalgamating old, OLD OCs and playing around with them.
Here we have the four Ishtar sibling, including my OC, Zahra. She is Marik's twin sister, fostered by an American family after escaping the darkness of the tomb. She harbors a lot of trauma from her formative years, which manifests itself through a mask of teenage ennui. When a classmate goes missing, she finds herself confronting her past through the tournament...I'm still working out the kinks.
Drew this little doodle as part of a larger art piece at Exceptional Minds’ 10-year celebration (held at Walt Disney Studios in Burbank…a real dream come true for me!)
