Workout Sessions for Beginner Exerciser
Question:
I am a 5’3” 188 pound woman who is a beginner exerciser. What is a good workout session ( in minutes) and what are good beginner exercises?
Answer: Where you start your exercise program depends on a multitude of factors. First and foremost, as directed on every piece of fitness equipment, workout video, workout magazine…SEE YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE YOU START ANY EXERCISE PROGRAM. Your body dimensions suggest you are significantly overweight and most of the time that is due to the lack of physical activity along with a high caloric diet. If hiring a personal trainer or an online personal trainer is out of the question, your best option is to begin with cardiovascular exercise such as a stationary bike or elliptical. For the first week, try to get 15-20 minutes of continuous activity for 3-4 days on the machine. Once you are able to comfortably do that, extend the duration to 30, 40 up to 60. In the meantime you may want to begin flexibility and or weight training exercise but that depends on your progression Mike Behnken, MS, CSCS
