It’s National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

Know your status. Be safe, get tested and #beHIVsure.

An HIV test is the only way to know if you or a partner has HIV. Free or low-cost tests are available for anyone 12 and older at NYC Sexual Health Clinics, regardless of immigration status. You do not need to have consent from a parent or guardian to get tested.

Getting tested and knowing your HIV status is the first step toward taking care of your health.

If you test negative, you can learn about pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and other HIV prevention options.

If you test positive, you should meet with a health care provider and start HIV medications right away. Getting and staying on treatment keeps you healthy and prevents transmission to your sex partners. In NYC, HIV treatment is available, regardless of your immigration status or whether you have insurance.

Take the train? Take the test!

In 2015, Latinx accounted for nearly one-third of all new HIV diagnoses in NYC. National Latinx AIDS Awareness Day is a day to increase awareness about how HIV impacts the Latinx community and what we need to do to end the spread of HIV.

This is also a day of action. Over 55 New York Knows community partners, led by the NYC Health Department, will provide free HIV testing and educational resources throughout NYC on Friday, Oct. 13 between noon and 6 p.m.

If you take the train, make sure you take the test! Stop by one of the 35 subway stations across NYC to get your free HIV test.

April 18 is the Second Annual National Transgender HIV Testing Day

National Transgender HIV Testing Day was created to increase awareness of HIV status among all transgender and gender nonconforming people. Getting tested and knowing your HIV status is especially important for trans women of color, who experience higher rates of HIV. Those who provide care to TGNC people can learn more about the best way to meet the needs of the community.

All New Yorkers can benefit from knowing their HIV status. People who test negative can learn about HIV prevention tools, including daily PrEP and emergency PEP, which can help them stay negative. People who test positive can start HIV treatment to help them live long and healthy lives. 

If you are taking gender affirming hormones, your doctor can prescribe a PrEP or PEP regimen that will not interfere with your hormone therapy.

Friday, September 27 is National Gay Men’s HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

Find FREE HIV testing locations throughout New York City this National Gay Men’s HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.

Did you know that in NYC:

Approximately 60% of new HIV infections each year are among gay and bisexual men.

Half of men living with HIV are gay or bisexual.

Half of men newly diagnosed with HIV in 2017 were Black or Latino.

This National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NWGHAAD), we want to remind all New Yorkers that, regardless of the type of relationship you are in, HIV prevention and treatment is key. Learn more about how you can #beHIVsure  and #PlaySure! 

Did you know that in 2014, 1 out of every 5 new HIV diagnoses in NYC was among women and girls? Rates were disproportionately higher among NYC’s Black and Latina women — more than 9 out of every 10 newly diagnosed woman in 2014 was Black or Latina.
