Being correct and being convincing are two very different things.

I wrestle a lot with how to cover news in the internet age. There are so many factors to take into consideration, including pageviews, SEO, being "first," being "correct," not being misleading. Throw Twitter into the mix, though, and it's a whole different ballgame. You want to drive traffic to your site, so you can't give away the whole story in 140 characters and a link. But you have to write something enticing enough so people want to click--something that's often not a given with Twitter. (My own father says he "doesn't read blogs--he just reads tweets." :) ) The breaking news I've dealt with isn't always high-stakes (or of interest) to the world as a whole--save perhaps Kings of Leon's "Pigeon Gate"--but it is important. And this Adweek article sums up very well the challenges news sites face in the pressure-cooker of Internet news. (h/t to Maura and Romenesko)
