Just saw a trailer for the upcoming Wuthering Heights, and, uh, as a fan of the book who knows that it is fundamentally a horror story about mutually abusive codependence and the actual grittiness of classism, I sure hope Emerald wasn't involved with the marketing at all!

I still trust her ardently as a director and will tell anyone that Saltburn was very much already like Emily's original Wuthering Heights, but the trailer seems to have missed the memo of being unsettling somewhat entirely, or at least by a large margin.

"The Greatest Love Story Of All Time"??? Can NOBODY be normal about that concept?? First R+J and now C+H. It made her out to be a tragic heroine when she's a vindictive, conniving, and selfish heiress who never escapes her entitled mentality despite appearences of sweetness and affection. She would rather everyone around her suffer than grow up, permanently the headstrong child. Her brother is no better, and is in fact conspicuously Sir Not Appearing In This Trailer (although at least Linton makes a disciplined effort to step into frame several times). No dirty stable straw either.

I won't even speak of Heathcliff, which is the best revenge anyone can offer the character. I will say simply that the styling is atrocious and Jacob Elordi is too charmingly twinkish to sell me on the hidden darkness.

The casting overall displeases me. But I've had quite enough of Margot Robbie for many years now. Perhaps others are excited. I know she's enthusiastic about the role and have no doubts in her ability to perform, it just would be nice to have literally anyone new. Perhaps someone more waifish, to really sell the cold reveal of her manipulative and demanding personality. Frankly I would rather see a cast of relative unknowns, but that wouldn't sell. Somehow I am the only one I know who just wants a haunting and ghoulish art film by an auteur (Saltburn).

The setting and actual filming looks phenomenal, which is totally unsurprising to me given the director's previous smash hit (again, Saltburn!) that I was so impressed by.

It was like Gawain and the Green Knight but good. Coherent. Cohesive, even. Barry's obscene improv move at the grave had me thinking Wuthering Heights even then, at which point I knew Emerald was fundamentally the only director I would ever be interested in seeing tackle it.

I really, truly hope that producer decisions haven't ruined the experience for me. I might even want to see it in a physical theater. :(
