The finale in our three part series focuses on the plumbing. So far we have discussed two components the fish tank and the plant bed. So how do we connect these two components, its quite simple really. Basically we put the plant bed on top of the fish tank and then we pump water into the plant bed and let it drain directly into the fish tank. The plumbing itself is a little more involved as we are going to build a siphon to regulate water levels in our plant bed but the theory is just that. Pump water into the plant bed and let gravity flow it out the hole we make in the bottom and into the fish tank.

 So what do we need to know for our plumbing. Again we want to make sure our plastics our food safe. This is easy to accomplish as pvc is used in every house almost in america and that is the main component for our plumbing. The real thing to check is the tubing for the pump. Make sure it is an acceptable plastic such as HPDE. Anything sold at a hydroponics store should be all right. Most tubing for submersible water pumps fits this criterion. The second thing is really just to make sure you have enough. Using the bed we use and the siphon design we use you shouldn’t need more than 1 foot length of any pipe type.

 The most important thing that you will need to know for the plumbing is how to construct a bell siphon.
