What is a bench vice?
A bench vice is a type of clamping device that is used to hold an object in place so that it can be worked on.
Bench vices are most commonly used for holding workpiece in place when sawing, filing, shaping and sanding. They are also used for clamping objects during glue-ups and assembly.
Bench vices come in many different forms and styles. The most common types of bench vises are the woodworker's vise, the machinist's vise, the metalworker's vise and the blacksmith's vise.
