Benee - Kua Kore He Kupu / Soaked 2019
Stella Rose Bennett, better known as Benee, is a New Zealand singer and songwriter from Auckland. In both 2019 and 2020, she consecutively won Single of the Year, Best Solo Artist and Best Pop Artist at the New Zealand Music Awards. Benee initially gained local prominence with her singles "Glitter" and "Soaked", before her 2019 single "Supalonely" saw international popularity following its success on the video-sharing platforms TikTok and Youtube. Since 2018, Benee has earned seven entries on the Triple J Hottest 100, three of which were in the 2019 list. Benee subsequently released her debut album, Hey U X, in November 2020. She also released her third EP, Lychee, in March 2022 which charted at number 13 on the Official New Zealand Music Chart.
"Soaked" was released as the lead single from Benee's debut extended play Fire on Marzz in 2018. The song was released on Spotify, received airplay on New Zealand radio, and reached number 58 on the Triple J Hottest 100, 2018. In a press release, the song was described as "indie-slack fun with a little R'n'B swing". In 2019, Benee re-recorded the song in Te Reo Māori for Waiata / Anthems, a collection of re-recorded New Zealand pop songs to promote te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week). The new version, retitled "Kua Kore He Kupu / Soaked", featured lyrics reinterpreted by scholar Tīmoti Kāretu. This version reached number five on the New Zealand artists' singles chart. "Soaked" has been certified double-platinum in New Zealand.
