Coldplay | Musical Genius
Coldplay fans follow along here.
Sami and I were talking about Coldplay and going through different music videos (some new to us, some not), and I saw a striking resemblance between the video for Clocks and the one for Charlie Brown (personally my favorite Coldplay song of all time right next to Sky Full of Stars from the latest album). The videos give off a very similar feeling with the lights, movement, and lyrical themes. I called Charlie Brown the Clocks of Mylo Xyloto. Then, she took that further and called Speed of Sound the Clocks of X&Y. It was mainly from the similarities in the videos that we stumbled upon the similarities in vibes and energy as well. The music videos for these songs are all strongly performance based with the set designs as well.
When listening to them simultaneously (yeah, we tend to get geekish), you can see a progression in the lyrics, as she pointed out. They became less vague as time went on. And what I'd say about this is that it seems very telling of of their journey as musical genius and as people. As time went on, they gained more vitality and clarity. Charlie Brown is a flippin' party. You can't compare it to the energy of anything else in their previous albums, especially the first couple. But there's a subtle chain of progression that you can find with certain sets of songs, and there may be others and the same applies with other artists' works as well. Now Sky Full of Stars, in terms of energy, is up there, but I'm not sure whether it fits into the same chain because of the sense of purity and light that it gives off. The last three tracks mentioned had subtle darker vibes to them. Or perhaps that's something else that they're trying to get across- finally reaching that peak that they've always been wanting to get to. The entire video is also just one long performance and a magnificent celebration. But maybe that's just me reading too much into things :P
Music is one of the most beautiful things in life. Take your favorites- learn them, feel them, dance to them, hum, tap, sing to them, place them in perfect moments in life, and enjoy them fully.
