Just watched the 2016 Royal Ballet Giselle with Nela and Vadim and you know who was the fucking best?

BEN GARTSIDE AS HILARION!

I literally cannot. And please bear in mind I usually hate when they try to make Hilarion the good guy and I always moan over his bringing a) flowers or rather b) dead bird (it sort of make sense with him being a village hunter, but come on, it’s DEAD BIRD), and I have all sorts of issues with how Peter Wright’s production’s dealing with his whole story line (meaning - it’s not historically accurate, but I kind of like it anyway and it makes my crazy brain go even more nuts), BUT - Ben was so great in it. Every little detail you had no idea could even be there, he knew what he was doing and why every single second he was on stage, you can feel what he was feeling, I have never seen Hilarion’s interaction and love confession to Giselle so honest, sincere, simple and true, without any trace of violence (which, admittedly, should have bother me, but it didn’t, simply because his interpretation was so fresh and his own and...)!

Wow, look at me. Being in awe of Hilarion of all things. (And yes, I did indeed see good Hilarions - like Vincent Chaillet or more recently Denis Savin in Ratmansky’s production, but boy was Bennet on a different level!)

Liked Nela’s interpretation quite a lot, she was almost obnoxiously joyful and stupidly in love for lack of better word. However I cannot stop thinking of how great she would be as “the OG” Giselle. The strong, independent, flirty girl. Because you can tell this interpretation is somewhere inside her, but it’s simply something that’s not done in majority of current productions.

Also - SHE ACTUALLY STABBED HERSELF DURING MAD SCENE! I died. And then again when she was wipping off the blood from the wound from her hands with her skirt. Such a ridiculously tiny thing and what a difference it could make.

Ralph Fiennes took ballet lessons to understand ballet while directing The White Crow. He took these lessons at the ROH with Bennet Gartside. That is the best thing I’ve ever heard.
