The last four days had not been the easiest for Dean. Learning how to readjust to the land of the living was bad enough, but having to do this completely on his own was a whole other ball game. Cas was probably dead, Sam was god knows where, and the only glimmer of hope he had was the burn in his forearm every now and again when Benny started to get antsy.
"We're almost there, calm down," Dean said out loud, rubbing his arm. He followed the vampire's instructions.
'Follow the dirt path until it ends, to the left you will see a windmill, six paces straight in front of it will be my unmarked grave.'
The corners of Dean's mouth twitched up when he heard Benny's voice in his head.
"All right, you son of a bitch," he said, pulling the folded shovel out of his pack after walking the six paces. "This better be you."
Memories from the last year swirled in Dean's mind as he dug. The first time he had met Benny, he couldn't explain it, couldn't understand it, but Dean never felt threatened by him. Sure, he was a vampire, but Benny was just different in more ways than one. Even though their first meeting hadn't been the friendliest, they hadn't killed each other on the spot. And that was a big feat for both of them.
'Dig about 5 feet deep and you will find my bones.'
The only thing he really had available to gauge any kind of measurement right now was his body, so Dean guessed around his shoulder area, though, to be honest, he wasn't really sure. His plan was to just dig until he found Benny's remains.
Finally, some time after the sun had set, he found them. Covered in dirt and dripping with sweat, Dean climbed out of the hole. After cleaning the area on his arm that glowed with energy, he reached for his pocket knife and made a slash in his flesh. He watched as Benny's energy mixed with his blood dripped onto the bones as he started to recite the words exactly as the vampire told him.
"Anima corpori… fuerit corpus… totem resurgent…"
There was a blinding flash of light, leaving Dean's arm throbbing. And he noticed the remains were gone when he looked back down in the hole.
"Jesus…" he murmured, tying the handkerchief around his wound. And then he felt it, the eyes on him, the same eyes that he felt for the last year. Dean had to admit, he liked the feeling.
"Took ya long enough," Benny quipped with a smile.
"You're welcome…" Dean smarted back, making the vampire's smile grow. He heard neck bones cracking as Benny turned his head, letting out a soft groan. "Everything working?"
"Good enough," Benny told him, making his set of vampire teeth descend for a split second. "So what now?"
Dean took a deep breath, letting it out in a sigh, "I don't know, like we talked about… I guess."
They did talk about it, about how a hunter and a vampire couldn't be friends on the other side. Benny knew what was going to happen once they got topside, but the disappointment that pinged in his chest told him he wasn't ready. "Then, this is goodbye…"
Dean wanted to say no, but how the fuck was there any other option? "You just- just keep your nose clean," Dean stammered. "You hear me, Benny?"
He replied with a nod, holding his hand out as he walked over to the only person he had been close with in the last 50 years, feeling that flutter that happened every time Dean's skin made contact with his. "We made it, Dean," Benny said as they shook hands. "I can't believe it."
Dean smiled, pulling Benny into his embrace, hearing the soft chuckle push past the vampire's lips. He squeezed harder when he felt Benny's arm tighten. "You and me both."
Benny inhaled deeply, taking in Dean's scent. It was different here, not bad unless you counted the fact that it made him drool with desire. Neither of them loosened their hold; they stood there, wrapped up in each other while the crickets sang in the distance. Yet, as minutes slipped by, reality nudged at them
"You take care of yourself, Dean," Benny half pleaded, half ordered as he stepped back.
"I will," he promised, feeling the emptiness wash over him as soon as the vampire had vanished. With a hefty sigh he packed up his shovel and the rag he had used to wipe the sweat from his brow and headed for the nearest town.
A million thoughts swirled in his head as the fallen autumn leaves crunched under his feet; would Benny really be okay? Would Dean ever see him again? And if he did, would it be to hunt him? Could he really do it, though? Dean already knew the answer to the last one, even if he didn't want to admit it.
There was only one motel with eight rooms in total in the small town of Clayton. Dean needed a shower and decided he probably need to at least try to get some sleep before heading thirty-something hours to the opposite point of the country.
However, he quickly realized that sleep was out of the question after sliding between the sheets. Dean cursed himself for letting someone get so close. This was the reason he never had before. Sure, he'd been upset when he left Lisa and when Cassie dumped him. But saying goodbye to Benny and him being really gone now fucking broke him.
"What the fuck?!" Dean jumped out of bed when he heard the gentle knocks. "It's the middle of the night," he groaned, grabbing the pistol off his bedside table as he sidled over to the door. A smile danced on his lips when he recognized the low grumbles coming from the other side, and when he looked through, the sigh confirmed it. Benny couldn't stay away from him, and Dean didn't want him to.
"Hey, I um- just wanted to…" Benny stammered. "Never mind, just take care of yourself, okay?" he repeated the last thing he said to Dean. If vampires could blush, Benny would be about fifty shades of red right now. He spun on his heels, ready to take off, when the sound of Dean's voice stopped him.
"Benny…" he said, swinging the door open all the way open when the vamp looked back. "Come on."
Dean's breath caught in his throat when he felt his feet leave the ground. Next he knew, he was back in the motel bed with Benny looming over him. "A heads up would've been nice."
Benny chuckled, "I'll remember that next time."
"Next time?" Dean questioned. "Does there really—" his words were cut off when Benny's head dipped, capturing his lips in a soft but passionate kiss. The real world would have to wait until tomorrow, and Dean would have to figure out a way to explain to Sam, if he was even alive. But none of that mattered right now. What did matter was that he had finally gotten what he had been wanting for nearly a year.
"Dean Winchester," Benny whispered, his hot breath tickling Dean's ear. "I am so in love with you."
"Took ya long enough." Dean mocked his words from earlier, earning a chuckle from him. "Me too, Benny… Me too."
