I suppose Crowley was trying to be funny. He sauntered up to the counter, a small brown book in his hand. "I wonder if there's anything about you in here," he said. He handed me the book: The Natural History of Nonsense, by Bergen Evans. Ha ha, Crowley, yes, you're funny. Still, it was nice to be reminded of this book. Written in 1946, the book describes the depressing prevalence of irrationality and foolishness, even among people who should know better. Perhaps my favorite part of this book, however, is the handwritten note in the front of my copy: "To Nancy, hoping that she will enjoy this book as much as I enjoy hearing her laughter. All my love, John."
