Same country.

Same uniform rules.

Very different outrage.

If we’re going to talk about respect for the uniform, then the standard should apply to everyone, not just when it’s politically convenient.

Wood Engraving Wednesday

LINDA HOLMES

English wood engraver Linda Holmes (1950-2015) has provided engraved illustrations for three publications by the Lewisburg, Pennsylvania Press of Appletree Alley. One of those books is Printing as Art: William Morris & His Circle of Influence printed in an edition of 150 copies by Juanita Bishop and Appletree Alley's founder Bernard Taylor in 1994. The book presents correspondence held at Bucknell University by William Morris to T. J. Cobden-Sanderson, William Butler Yeats to his sister Elizabeth (Lolly) Yeats (co-founder of the Dun Emer Press and the Cuala Press), and Elizabeth Yeats to Emery Walker, as well as reprinting George Bernard Shaw's essay "Shaw on Modern Typography."

Linda Holmes trained as a journalist with the BBC and became a presenter for the network's Newsnight from 1980 to 1983. In 1985, she and her husband, BBC journalist David Holmes, retired from London to Walpole, in Suffolk. In 1989, Holmes attended Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts (now Camberwell College of Arts) to study wood engraving under Simon Brett and Yvonne Skargon. Holmes enjoyed a 25-year career as both a wood engraver and a painter until her death from pancreatic cancer at the age of 65.

Book Review

Bernard Taylor: Mother’s Boys. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ British Literature, Suspense, Thriller. Pub 1988

Blurb: Becoming tired of living the single life following her divorce, Judith has it in her mind to rekindle the relationship with her ex-husband and start the marriage over again. And her children, who live with Robert, their father, want it too - particularly the two older boys, Kester and Michael. But Robert has other ideas. He is in a new relationship now, with warm and gentle Netta, and for the first time in years he is truly happy. But this is something that Kester and Michael cannot accept. And Netta it is who is the fly in the ointment. But for her, they reckon, they would all be back together again, a complete, loving family once more. And so the boys' pathological hatred grows, focused on the unsuspecting Netta, a hatred eventually erupting in a sustained scene of horror and violence that will change their lives for ever.

My review: An excellent novella, with great writing and an ending that was a shockeroo. Loved it.
