You’ve mentioned reijeanbert a couple of times and I am of course intrigued by the idea. How might you picture Jean and Bert bonding when Reiner’s not around?
Do they both gang up on Reiner to yell at him when he’s being a reckless idiot? Does Jean encourage Bertholdt to be more assertive? Does Bertholdt in turn encourage Jean to be less… himself? 🤭
Hello!! Apologies for the delay.
Bertholdt is definitely the calm one (too calm at times). Jean goes from zero to hysteria in under ten seconds, Reiner simmers with rage and Bertholdt just looks nervous. He rarely gets angry per se, he usually turns sad if things get out of hand. Jean is always on his ass, trying to persuade him to become more assertive and outspoken, possibly even succeeding a little in the end (because, as we know, he’s very stubborn).
As for Jean and Bert bonding, I think Jean feels comfortable being silent around Bertholdt. Sometimes they just sit outside, watching the clouds, or go for a walk in the forest. Bert seems like someone who appreciates the little things and doesn’t like to rush; he’d rather stop and admire the view before him than push forward.
Which brings me to the idea from Junior High where Bert is good with certain arts and crafts – I feel like he would be supportive of Jean’s potential artistic endeavors (Reiner becomes jealous of their connection, but come on, he’s never left out, he just can’t draw for shit). I don’t think Bertholdt tries to encourage Jean to change his ways of being, but, ironically, being around Bert has a calming effect on Jean.

There’s at least one modern AU fic (that I remember) where Reiner, Bert and Jean are a very wholesome throuple. In general, Bertholdt is about as calm and patient as needed in order to survive with Jean and Reiner under one roof. :))
