So, I often tell people that a big part of the reason why Sisko's my favorite captain is because he's a dad. That's true, but there's more to it than that.
What I like about Sisko is that he's an incredibly good dad. There are so many bad parents (especially fathers) in fiction, and even if such complicated relationships can be relatable, it can also be really nice to watch a show where a dad loves his son—and a son loves his dad. Not only that, but they're openly affectionate towards one another, which is important, I think, for parents and children to be.
Also, I really like how Ben and Jake's relationship grows as Jake grows up. In early seasons, Ben is protective of Jake and trying to mould him into a good person. By the later seasons, though, Ben knows that Jake has turned out to be a wonderful human being. It becomes a relationship of respect and even friendship, even as Ben is still there for his son for advice and support.
I am not a father, and I don't know if I ever will be, but if I am one day, I hope I can be a good dad, like Benjamin Sisko is.

1. He is always protecting his crew but isn't overbearing
