omg HI BESTIE sorry i didn’t see this yesterday i’ve cured my phone addiction with computer addiction and let everything fall to disrepair while i stew my kevin. and now neil. but YAY this is one of my favs SO

it basically follows mary hatford from the week before she leaves home for baltimore (or from getting there and then lots of hateful flashbacking. maybe a bit later so the time to get mad at her family has turned into mad at everyone and also her mother has now killed herself)(the night she left. sentencing her daughter to her own fate was A Bit Too Much for her) potentially right up to her death? it might stop at the night she takes neil and runs and then have an epilogue as she’s dying. coming up with this on the spot rn but i think i like that

ANYWAY so plot wise obviously there’s nathan and his work + neil BUT im brewing. im BREWING.

-a personal beef with moriyama’s wife (RIP) and on finding out she’s been killed a generous dose of bitterness that not only did someone else get to kill her but that they got paid when she’d literally have done it for love of the game. later chapter reflection on this and their positions as women in violent relationships forced into submission. but still one of those where you’re like ‘the bitch didn’t deserve that. but still a bitch’

-an affair with someone in nathan’s circle. and SPOILER HERE but im having a lot of fun with how this ends

-^ SO: they’re sort of together, sort of not. it’s kind of a sexually charged rivalry, but he’s one of the only people to interact with mary like she’s a person and she won’t be stupid enough to thank him for that, not when he’s so fucking annoying. anyway she probably loves him. he never gets into why he works for nathan, and she won’t ask. when neil is about eight, maybe younger, nathan hands him either a knife or (if he’s younger) a cleaver he can barely lift. he looks at mary, scared, and Mary doesn’t have an answer. she waits, watching, ready to move but scared to breathe. (calling him Guy for purposes of explaining, he’s not got a name yet. maybe a third malcolm sibling) Nathan looks between Guy and Nathaniel and says that if Guy can kill him first, he gets to live. it’s come to his attention that Guy has been skimming off the top, or leaking information (not that he’s fucking nathan’s wife, that would have had mary killed too), but Nathan doesn’t say this until after. Besides, Nathaniel needs the practice. Guy pales, clearly not wanting to kill a child but knowing Nathan’s word is good. maybe Nathaniel puts up a good fight, maybe he freezes when Guy starts to wheeze, the way dying people do. He hesitates, and Guy takes his opportunity. Every organ in her body stuck in her throat, time barely moving, heartbeat coming up with the vomit in her stomach, Mary grabs the shotgun off the wall and fires right at him, his body dropping to the ground and half his face dropping fifteen feet back from it.

-^ Nathan hits Mary for intervening when Nathaniel should have made the kill, but doesn’t really mean it. It’s a hit, not a beating. and it barely registers. not only is the man you love dead, but you killed him. not only is he dead, but in his final seconds he betrayed you. not only is he dead, but if he’d lived you never could have forgiven him for even thinking about killing Nathaniel. She sits in Nathaniel’s room and watches him play with his toy cars while she ignores a part of herself erupting and killing everything in range.

but YEAH that’s kind of it atm!! some stuart some other lore stuff but it’s not a solid plan yet because this is going to be a Long one. also title obviously from Fast Car but it’s the most literal mary taking neil and running lyric of Ever. Leave tonight or live and die this way. Die your own way, if that’s the only victory you can claim. But get the fuck out and don’t look back.
