THE MEANING OF HANUKKAH Hanukkah, which starts on 25 Kislev (beginning-to-mid December), is the Festival of Lights. It marks the beginning of our experience of the spiritual reality, the initial crossing of the barrier between the corporeal (egoistic) and spiritual (altruistic) worlds. Hanukkah’s concepts and customs—the war of the Maccabees and the Greeks, the Hanukkah miracle, the candle, light, oil and wick—all connect to the crossing of this barrier between corporeality and spirituality. In order to cross this barrier, we need to rise above our egoistic desires. This is the essence of the war between the Maccabees and the Greeks: it’s an inner war between a person’s egoistic desires, symbolized by the Greeks, and the aspiration to unite above them in mutual love and bestowal, symbolized by the Maccabees. However, since the ego is our very human nature, how can we muster the strength to overcome it? To make it more complicated, any altruistic desire we have is tiny in comparison to the ego, which constantly wants to absorb self-aimed pleasures into itself. That’s where the Hanukkah miracle comes in. If we’re persistent with our efforts to unite above our egoistic attitudes, we attract the spiritual force of unity, love and bestowal, called “the light.” Although our desire to unite is weak and almost imperceptible compared to our egoistic desires, the moment we reach a desperate point in our failing-yet-unrelenting efforts to overcome our ego, the spiritual light makes a miraculous appearance: it’s the help we need in order to overcome egoism, and become drawn to intentions to unite, love and bestow. This is the meaning of the Maccabees winning the war against the Greeks.
Nature operates by a law of bestowal & love. To discover a perfect life for everyone, we need only let Nature influence us the way it wants.
The Creator’s commandments are the laws of nature—both the laws of nature of our world that we partly see, understand, and know about, and the laws of the upper nature that is concealed from us—which are based on the attributes of love and bestowal, mutual cooperation, and understanding. The system is built so that if we are normally incorporated in it and fulfill our role, taking our niche in nature, all of nature operates harmoniously, thus filling each of us with harmony.
Dr. Michael Laitman:
The Creator is fully the giver. He is the characteristic of bestowal and love. There is nothing more than this. There is only complete bestowal, complete love, absolute, pure, perfect, and infinite, and it is revealed in us to the same degree that we are ready to absorb it, to bring ourselves in line with it.
In general, I can understand and feel every characteristic only if it is found within me.
When I look at some cockroach, I don’t feel that it lacks something, that it loves its children and right now, is running to them with crumbs of food. I don’t share any characteristics with it to be able to feel it.
However, if I would begin to go deeper to penetrate and explore, ultimately, I would feel the needs of the beastly level. People are able to be sensitive to animals they are close to, including pet owners or scientists who devote themselves to research.
For example, in my childhood, I had a friend who always had small animals living in his pockets: here a mouse, there a bird. He even would come to school with them, and, much later, he went on to study zoology. So, he understood them. He would find a white mouse and pet it, and the mouse wouldn’t run away.
He would say, “You know, he is not afraid to approach you,” as if he was whispering to it.
However, we need to develop other feelings within us to be able to feel the Creator. If my friend recreated the feelings of the mouse within himself, so we need to give shape within us to a feeling of the Creator, bestowal and love.

THE MEANING OF THE BLOWING OF THE SHOFAR (RAM’S HORN) ON ROSH HASHANAH The prayer said on the Jewish New Year mentions three conditions of ascending to the spiritual level called the New Year: 1. Kingdom 2. Memory 3. Blowing of the Shofar (ram’s horn) What does this mean? 1. Kingdom is the desire for the higher force of bestowal of love that created everything, and which sustains our soul of Adam HaRishon, to rule us instead of our egoism that currently rules us. 2. We have “memories” or informational genes (Reshimot) that are able to bring us to a state where we will discover our positive connection with each other to the same extent that we resemble the force of bestowal and love that sustains us at our root. 3. The way to achieve this is by blowing into the Shofar, or in other words, by raising the importance of love, bestowal and connection above the importance of egoistically receiving for personal benefit. The Hebrew word “Shofar” (“horn”) comes from the Aramaic word “Shufra” (“importance”).
Through the quality of love & bestowal one can feel the higher life because one exits one’s self & enters the other.
Do you want to see the true reality? Go ahead – it’s inside that common desire aimed at bestowal! When you bring the desires of others closer to you, you fulfill the necessary condition for feeling the spiritual world, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” It’s here! All you have to do is enter it, become part of it and feel it! It is above and beyond all the boundaries and limits; it is absolutely good and does only good. It has no life or death, but just Infinite fulfillment.
What Is Missing to Gain Balance in Life? For example, in the development of an apple, it goes from a small balance to ever-greater balance, until it ripens completely. However, on all of the previous levels, the apple was in some kind of partial balance. When the deficiency relative to the next state was revealed, it developed more and more. This is how the process of development works. Therefore, we need to see what we can do now in order to bring ourselves into balance if today the current state of humanity is like spoiled fruit. What force are we missing for balance? We see that it is necessary to add the force of bestowal to the force of our egoism. If we balance these two forces, we will live in peace, in good health, in a harmonious family, and in a good world. This is the only thing that we are missing. It is only possible to arrive at the force of bestowal through a correct environment that teaches everyone how to reach it. It will help him personally in his private life, as well as in the society, and then all of humanity and our entire civilization.
