i can't stop thinking about conclave. the use of sound, the use of silence. the music coming in and disrupting the moment. the voyeuristic shots imitating confession - dialogue heard but not seen. the shots over lawrence's shoulders, his back to us and to himself. the turtles as a symbol for goodness and slow but steady progress. the way women of the church are highlighted and seen but very rarely heard. the juxtaposition of technology and tradition. the costuming that is almost exactly the same except for the individual flairs. the use of light, shining in for illumination or shrouding their secrets. the exploration of faith even in the most narrowest of spaces. the explicit condemnation of exclusionary beliefs. just... conclave!!

2026 guidelines

the older i get, the more i love setting goals for myself however☝️i don't get upset if i don't reach them so think it is more appropriate to call them guidelines 🫶. i'm just posting my fandom/media guidelines here but i do have some more general ones that i will hopefully follow as well!

Reading

one page per day (last year i tried one chapter and that was too hard so keeping it simple this year)

12 new books for the year in total (i haven't hit my total book goal in years + usually only get close because of rereads so want to prioritise new to me books)

read 4 nonfiction books (i love nonfic! i need to read more of it!)

read books that i already own instead of borrowing/buying

Movies

go to the movies twice a month (last year my goal was once a month and it was so much fun so upping it)

52 new to me movies (great goal, highly recommend)

watch more movies directed and/or written by women (i am mortified by the number of movies i watched directed by women and want to do better about that)

start up on making gifs again for each movie

TV Shows

one new to me show each month (great goal, highly recommend)

stop using tv shows as background noise while crafting, working or doing chores (i'm still not sure about how to do this... might involve more music in my life or something)

make gifs for complete series that i watch (still trying to figure out a way i can do this without it being overwhelming but see how i go!)

january wrap up

this is just a little summary of how i'm going with my 2026 guidelines. it's a little bit about accountability but also hoping to make my life easier in december when i want to unpack all of the data i track!

LIFE

did not waste any time scrolling on reels <3

went out on a few dates, including a whole weekend away

spent too much money on delivery but will hopefully get better in feb

drank at least 1L of water every day :)

did better about brushing and flossing

stretched a few times but not as much as i would like

did not really go on any walks so hopefully in feb can fit that in

finished an embroidery hoop! for the first time in who knows how long

also worked on a big bang fic a lot but not as much as i hoped

tried two new recipes (both were fine but not stand outs)

left the house 21/31 days!

BOOKS

successfully read at least one page every day (the most pages read in one day was 196 on the 19th)

finished 2 books - one reread (sea of monsters) and one new to me (circe)

dnf'd two books because they were not to my taste (dreyfus affair and downtime.. both m/m romances)

started two other books - what britain did to nigeria (nonfic) and convergence (star wars book reread so that i can read later books)

TV

117 episodes from 10 series (puts me on pace for 1400 episodes.....)

20 episodes were new to me (from 4 different series: pjo + ds9 + the pitt + a league of their own)

most watched series: the west wing

oldest episodes were from 1993 (four episodes from season 5 of the simpsons)

newest episodes were from this year (the pitt and pjo)

~20% were directed by women but ~50% had at least one woman writer credited

most watched genre was drama (a league of their own + the pitt + west wing)

the shortest episodes (3 in total) were 22 minutes and the longest were 60 minutes (16 in total); there were 5 episodes that did not have a length on imdb

MOVIES

20 movies in total (on pace for 240 which defs won't happen)

16 movies were part of a franchise/an adaptation (15 were james bond films)

oldest was 1974; most recent was 2025

only 3 movies directed by a woman (because of james bond but not an excuse)

most watched genre was action (again, because of james bond)

shortest film was 19 minutes (heart shot); longest was 144 (casino royale)

kind of stalled on my gif making so will hopefully pick that up again soon!

sadly did not go to the movies once this month :(

FICS

35 fics in total (on pace for 420.. nice)

most fics were new to me (only 7 rereads)

13 fandoms (most read: hockey rpf with 12 fics)

most read pairing was a hrpf one and none of your business <3

primarily m/m but second was f/f

oldest fic: 2006 (a james bond fic)

internalised homophobia and workplace relationship were top two tropes

one of my goals for this year was to stretch more so i found a 5 minute stretching routine on youtube and like... i desperately need to work on this because it's so hard 😭 the lady makes it look so easy meanwhile i'm dying on the floor
