Desk is getting a bit crowded! Daily routine involves waking up in the morning, making the bed, and removing the two foreground piles of books onto the duvet so I can work. (The fossils I work around.) The evening involves moving the piles back onto the desk so I can sleep. The bed has become a daytime table for all things that are not on the desk. I need a bookshelf, but I am moving soon and told myself I can wait until then to organise. Lies and untruths; the library grows despite my woefully average attempts at self control; soon cannot come quickly enough; they will find paper in my lungs. I'm reading far too many at a time and have not got enough time to read. (Should I take a week off work just to get through the new ones? The idea is more appealing every day.)

THANK YOU yes i love to talk about books. i read the 3 baru books out in a whirl back in Jan and became obsessed. a+ political intrigue fantasy combo’d with heart breaking romance. GREAT STUFF
other books.....well, to keep this from being agonisingly long heres some stuff i read and loved in 2021!!
anything by silvia moreno-garcia (i went on a complete binge and devoured everything i could get my hands on, if i had to pick my top faves would be velvet was the night, mexican gothic and the beautiful ones but honestly i read them all in like 8 days and loved them so whatever one appeals the most GO FOR IT)
vespertine - margaret rogerson (i love necromancers, and this was SO fun - also don’t be put off by the fact its 1 in a series, its that rare miracle of a fantasy novel that has a complete narrative)
the blacktongue thief - christopher buehlman (just a very unique set up for a world despite appearances on the tin. did a lot of stuff i didn’t expect and genuinely intrigued by where the author will go from here)
anything by shirley jackson (i specifically read hangsaman this year - but everything she writes is breathtaking.)
the mask of mirrors - m. a carrick (great intrigue/heist fantasy and the second one has just come out so it’s now a complete duology! don’t let the page count intimidate you this one rly flew by for me. if you liked six of crows i REALLY recommend this one)
the witness for the dead - katherine addison (if you HAVENT read goblin emperor what ARE you doing. the sequel also blew my brain thanks again katherine for ruining my life)
i also went back and re-read the entire old kingdom series by garth nix, who is very near and dear to my heart as i loved sabriel since i was a Wee Sass. if you want just a solid fantasy, great heroine and necromancy this is such a good series

Do you know what wasn’t fun to get used to? Gravity. What was that all about? Even after all the months here she never stopped feeling its inexorable pull, she’d gone much longer without it, after all. The form their hosts had decided was to be her base didn’t make it any easier either, and neither did all these books.
Don’t get her wrong, books were some of her favourite things, the fun books anyway. But, a box full of books was heavy and moving them to the new Black Lodge was becoming embarrassingly more of a toll than she’d ever fully admit. She huffed mostly in annoyance and partially in exertion, the Lodge wasn’t even supposed to be a static thing and trying to set it up in such a... Rooted way just felt plain wrong. Well, it would do for now, at the very least she needed somewhere to rewrite some old books in peace.
If she could ever get them in there! At the very least it seemed like she wasn’t alone in this street A rather tall gentleman with a fetching coat and some adorable fluffy ears.

Helping my dad clean out his garage, I found a damn first edition paperback of L. Ron Hubbard’s The Invader’s Plan, so yes, I will be keeping/reading that, thank you very much.
