Biblestudying: Genesis Ch. 3
Summary: This is the chapter when everything hits the fan. Enter sin, exit garden and all that.
What I want to talk about: People joke a lot about the events that unfold in this chapter. A lot of these jokes are misogynistic. Most of them refer to blame. It’s all Eve’s fault. There was a lot of passed blame in the actual chapter too. God asks Adam if he ate from the tree that he wasn’t supposed to eat from. Adam immediately blames two people for his own actions. He tells God that the woman that “You gave to me” gave him the fruit. He’s not just blaming Eve. He’s insinuating that none of this would have happened if God hadn’t created Eve. Adam blames God for the whole thing. God addresses Eve and asks why she ate the fruit. She blames the serpent that persuaded her to eat the fruit. Eve also avoids responsibility for her actions. Man, woman, and serpent are all punished. Adam and Eve are thrown out of the Garden of Eden, but before they leave, God gives them clothing made from animal skins. Thus, the two are faced with the new reality of death.
Another thing: I want to talk about nudity. In this chapter, Adam and Eve first experience the knowledge of good and evil by developing a new understanding of nakedness. Some people seem to think that the two just realized that they were naked and that was enough to make them search for fig leaves. I can’t imagine this to be the case. I also can’t imagine that this was the first time Adam and Eve thought of nudity in a sexual way. That would mean that sex is a result of sin. It’s not. So I don’t think that when Adam and Eve were frantically searching for leaves they were acting on embarrassment. Rather, I believe that they recognized that with the introduction of selfishness came vulnerability. For the first time, humans realized they were capable of harming one another and of being harmed.
We see this new mix of fear and selfishness in the responses Adam and Eve give to God. They don’t want to carry the blame, so they try to pass that weight to someone else. It’s now every man for himself.
