I seem to be experiencing a biblical plague of locusts. I keep finding grasshoppers in my apartment and now in my car. It's creepy, and has never happened before. I'll keep you updated if the water in my sink turns to blood. Personally, I would prefer frogs (or possibly one really big frog).

CDC: Leprosy cases rising in Central Florida

A letter from the CDC said many of the new cases show no signs of the "traditionally known risk factors."

Ever since Gov. Ron DeSantis ramped up his anti-woke crusade, Florida has been hit by a series of Biblical-style plagues. Malaria is trending in the state, the citrus crop is the worst since the Great Depression, and water temperature on the state's Gulf coast has hit 101.1° F.

Now leprosy is hitting Florida.

The Centers for Disease Control said in a recent statement that cases of leprosy have been increasing in Central Florida with the region accounting for 81 percent of reported cases in the state and almost one-fifth of reported cases nationwide.  Leprosy is a bacterial infection characterized by discolored skin, lumps and nerve damage. If untreated, the disease can progress to paralysis, blindness and physical disfigurement. Most people think of leprosy as a disease from biblical times when it was considered a curse. The Hebrew word for leprosy used in the Bible -- tsara'ath -- loosely translates to "unclean." According to the CDC, several of the newly reported cases in Florida don't appear to have any connection to the "traditionally known" risk factors for catching the disease.  For instance, while leprosy was previously known to affect people who immigrated from areas where the disease was endemic, the CDC says roughly one-third of the cases in Florida were contracted locally, while the rate of new cases among people born outside the U.S. has actually been declining for the past 20 years.

There may be an environmental reason for this upsurge.

"The absence of traditional risk factors in many recent cases of leprosy in Florida, coupled with the high proportion of residents who spend a great deal of time outdoors, supports the investigation into environmental reservoirs as a potential source of transmission," the CDC said.

The state has a climate-denier governor who spends most of his time outside the state at campaign events trying to prove that he's more extreme than Donald Trump.

Florida's problems will spiral while DeSantis continues to roam around the US praising slavery while endlessly screaming "woke! woke! woke!" at anybody who disagrees with his far right views.

Floridians should not expect DeSantis to take the leprosy outbreak seriously. He has already stated that if he's elected president he'd consider appointing anti-vaxxer and conspiracy nut RFK Jr. as head of the Centers for Disease Control.
