Like if you love books
I went to the bookstore for one specific book... I left with seven and forgot the one I went for. I have an addiction.
“Just when do men that have different blood in them stop hating one another?” ― William Faulkner, 1932, Light in August
It is no doubt the exquisite uniqueness of individuality which has made the diversity of our society so incredible. We have inventors, entrepreneurs, artists, developers, care-givers, and visionaries.
Personal opinions, however, which are entirely subjective through conditioned thought, can certainly create controversy.
As a divided nation, the gap continues to widen from political to religious reasonings. At the root of what we may not know or understand is fear. Divisions breed fear which can turn to hate.
But at each of our source are billions of neurons running rapidly through nervous systems transmitting messages of survival. Blood pumping, thoughts churning and love lingering.
You and I are the same. We seek the same things though our approaches may vary. If I see you beneath your surface for what you really are, we can begin to work together toward a common goal.
I see you. Do you see me?
Love one another, but make not a bond of love: Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls... Give your hearts, but not into each other's keeping. For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts. And stand together yet not too near together: For the pillars of the temple stand apart, And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other's shadow.
-Kahlil Gibran, 1923 The Prophet
I took a deep breath and listened to the old bray of my heart. I am. I am. I am. -Sylvia Plath, 1963 The Bell Jar
Most of us know Sylvia Plath best by the outstanding lines she wrote touching the very foundations of her own mental instability.
Her words move us. We understand them. As she feels and pours them forth, so we feel and receive them. She was a powerful and gifted writer.
Yet she never much believed in her own talent. She never saw herself as anything extraordinary and in the end she took her own life with her two children sleeping in the next room. She left two glasses of milk out for when they woke up.
She left two glasses of milk but not herself.
We must be reminded that we are. We exist. And we must take deep breaths and listen.
I am. I am. I am.
"...one’s real life is so often the life that one does not lead..." -Oscar Wilde, 1882 in an introduction to Rose Leaf and Apple Leaf by Rennell Rodd
At times we find ourselves without a sense of purpose, don't we? Wondering why we're stuck in this job, relationship, routine, or city.
Religion sells faith-based purpose by the millions. Stacks of books, massive cathedrals, and passion filled pulpits telling us we are immortal. Because we are all looking for something real and some reason for being on this earth.
But perhaps if we look unabashedly at ourselves and what we must do, what we love to do, then we can find ourselves living more authentically.
And it may be that our greatest challenge is to face the fear of being who we are without regard for anyone else's fear ridden opinions. And in doing so, become free to lead our real lives.
