On the way home from work today, I was listening to Big 100.3, the D.C. area's classic rock station. They played You Give Love a Bad Name (guilty pleasure material), Pinball Wizard (great song by a great band), Frankenstein (I think? That song's guitar solo is currently stuck in my head, anyway) - it was a pretty typical dad rock lineup. So you can understand if, having been lulled into a sense of security by these familiar song selections, I was totally unprepared for what followed.
The DJ came on and proudly announced that they were about to play three songs from the same artist with no commercial interruptions, then started to hint at who it might be. Now, in my immeasurable fury, I've forgotten the precise wording of his stupid opinion, but to summarize, he said that the band had been kicking around in the early 70s, not releasing anything of note or finding much success, but they really took off after acquiring a new lead singer. Can you guess who it was? Yes, the singer was Phil Collins, and the band was Genesis.
First, I should say that I have nothing against Phil Collins. He's got a distinguishable, great-sounding rock and roll voice. I like a good chunk of the songs on my post-Gabriel Best of Genesis album. Abacab, in particular, is a killer piece of synth pop. And putting the blame for the syrupy ballads and droning soft rock of later Genesis squarely on his shoulders wouldn't be fair; Phil was merely staring into the looming musical abyss known as the 80s.
But honestly, where did this guy get the nerve to imply that Genesis hadn't put out some great records with Gabriel at the helm? Has he never scrapped together the patience to listen to Lamb in its entirety? What about the far more digestible Selling England By the Pound? Does he truly hear music, or as a DJ does he just see numbers and figures? Perhaps he has an honest affection for what Collins did with the band, which, okay, but how do you defend the constant airplay of Follow You Follow Me?
I sort of want never to listen to that station again, but I'm currently without an iPod, and basically every other FM frequency in the area makes me want to swerve into oncoming traffic. My life sure is hard.
