I genuinely believe, like biblical Cain, that he didn't have a concept of "killing" and "death" (probably only really learned about it after Scratch abstracted). I belive he was hurt, scared, angry, and dejected; He simply wanted to hurt them back, not kill. So he desperately took it out on Blue. And I think he was confused, then terribly guilty.
