Speaking a second language

Speaking a second language is worrying/apologizing for any minimal gramatical mistake, the total opposite from a native speaker. 

Speaking a second language is having favorite words in each language (because they are more complete/precise or for an emotional connection).

Speaking a second language is having a mind switch when you're talking, your attitude change and even your voice (and I swear is not faking, just happens naturally).

Speaking a second language is getting so excited when you have the chance to talk in the language you don't use frequently (your target language or your mother tongue).

Speaking a second language is understanding more than others the beauty and grace of your own language.

I’ll be like “oh, I’m STUDYING a language. I don’t speak it and probably never will.” And then I’ll sometimes catch myself saying words or phrases in my head in that language just as a way of thinking a thought- 😀

I’m Em, welcome to my new blog.

This will basically just consist of posts about language learning, but I’m also open to questions about my journey and language learning in general.

Languages I’m currently learning:

- Spanish/Español

I’ve been learning Spanish in school for 3 and a half years. If I’m being honest, I only began taking it because I felt it would help me in the future when applying to colleges. However, recently I started taking my learning more seriously, so I’ve been reviewing and such. I don’t understand really anything I should understand, but I will eventually. 🙏

- Korean/한국어

I’ve been self-studying Korean off and on since December 2022. I’m really into K-pop, K-dramas and Korean culture. I’m hoping to visit Korea when I graduate. It’s crazy but I understand more Korean than I do Spanish… 😅 I find Korean really fun and really easy (at least for now…) and I can’t wait to progress!

When you’re suddenly deeply aware of the fact that you’re reading/speaking in another language and your tongue feels like crumbling cement in your mouth and you’re convinced you’ve never spoken a word before. <<<<

I got question tagged by @xxsosuemexx so here it goes (posting words feels weird).

1. What’s your favorite Halloween movie? This October my friends and I watched a ton of Halloween-ish movies, but the one I loved the most Burying the Ex (thx @loveannkathleen I’ve watched it about 10 times)

2. What song do you always lip sync to in the mirror? Depends honestly, some days it’s musical lyrics (theatre major probs) but I’ve been obsessed with Melanie Martinez lately. So Mrs. Potato-Head is my that answer right now.

3. What’s the best Christmas present you’ve ever received? Uhhhhh I love a lot of things. Clothes are great, I got a sick LED hulahoop a while ago, but I like functional things that I’ll use all the time.

4. What’s your favorite drinking game? I really want to make a yarn web and put drunk people in it. Cause yes. But also making up drinking games to movies with my friends (i.e. when watching The Chronicles of Narnia drink whenever Edwin is a little bitch).

5. What’s your favorite or go-to recipe? Uh. That’s not pasta? I just made up a mashed cauliflower recipe??

6. If you were a superhero (or any other hero/heroine), who would you be and why? Luna Lovegood. Magic, brains, inability to give a fuck about what people think, and a beautiful trust and love for people that is rarely seen in this world.

7. What’s your favorite random fact that you like to pull out? Depends on the day. Right now I think it’s hilarious that “Ahoy” is standard greeting the the Czech Republic, despite the Czech being a land locked country.

8. Favorite joke? The worse the better. What’s batman’s favorite fruit? BA-NA-NA-NA

9. If you were in a famous band, what would it be called and what style of music would it be? I honestly don’t know, but it’d be weird as fuck, that’s for sure.

10. What’s your normal order at Starbucks? Or if you don’t go to Starbucks, your normal order at your favorite restaurant. Venti Very Berry Hibiscus Refresher. Or tea.
