Lauren Laverne asked me to write her poem for The Pool about Billie Holiday for her centenary. I ended up spending yesterday afternoon in floods of tears watching Billie Holiday footage and documentaries. I was reminded how tough she was and how hard her life was. I read about white people putting cigarettes out on her fur coat. I read about her management binding her ribs with bandages to get her on stage and hide her beatings. And I was reminded how she took the poem Strange Fruit and sang it and made damn sure it was heard, even though the record company said it would fail because of the subject matter. Whatever you do today take some time out to listen to her music, take a moment to thank the great Billie Holiday. That was no way to treat a Lady.
