Binary Star – Chapter 1 English Translation 

Pt1

Sorano Fuu: The rail bus arrived on time after I parted ways with Lena. After getting on, I sat alone in the middle and waited for departure. I was the only passenger. If it stayed this way, I’d be alone all the way to the destination. The rail bus only has one stop, and the ride takes about an hour.

(I wish I brought a book...)

As I gazed out the window, lost in thought, the departure announcement came on.

Announcer: Sorry to have kept you waiting. We're now departing for the Enchanted Forest.

Sorano Fuu: Just as the door was about to close

???: Hold on, I'm boarding too!

Sorano Fuu: The commotion was so loud I turned toward the door. A man rushed in.

Driver: Don't barge in like that! You almost got caught in the door.

???: Sorry, sorry! I’ll be more careful next time, I promise! Oh, here’s my ticket.

Driver: Alright, just sit down already.

???: Yes, yes... Oh

Sorano Fuu: Our eyes met. I quickly turned to the window and sank into my seat, pretending I hadn’t seen anything. (It's rude to stare... I need to be more careful.)

???: Hey, mind if I sit next to you?

Sorano Fuu: I turned around at the voice. It was the man who’d rushed in, now standing next to me, smiling.

???: I'd really like to sit next to you.

Sorano Fuu: There are plenty of other seats available...

???: It’d be crazy to find a cute girl like you and sit somewhere else, right? Besides, it's an hour-long ride, wouldn't it be more fun to talk?

Sorano Fuu: He’s being so pushy. I don’t know what to do... (Spending an hour with a stranger sounds exhausting.)

As I struggled to respond, another announcement came on.

Driver: How long are you going to stand there? I can’t move until you sit down.

???: Ah, that’s why we’re not moving. Sorry!

Sorano Fuu: I thought he’d leave, but he just stood there, smiling, waiting for my answer. There was no point in hesitating anymore.

Please... have a seat, for now.

???: Great! I’ll come over right now.

Sorano Fuu: Without hesitation, he grabbed my luggage, placed it on the seat across from me, and sat down... Right next to me? I was surprised. I thought he’d sit across.

???: Oh? Didn’t you hear me? I said I wanted to sit next to you.

Sorano Fuu: Speechless, I stared ahead as the bus departed. (An hour like this is going to be painful... He's way too close.) I'm not used to guys like this. They make me nervous.

???: Alright, let’s start with introductions! You first.

This is the first part of my translation for Binary Star Chapter 1. This isn't the full chapter. I plan to post the rest either later this month or in July.

I didn’t translate the prologue because it’s already been fully translated by a translation group, and I didn’t see a reason to redo something that’s already done.

I’ve decided to split the chapters into parts so I can release translations more quickly.

Hi! Can you give me some tips on learning Kanji? :)

Not sure if my tips would be helpful, but I love helping others who are keen on learning another language.

I’m not really sure where to start…

Usually I get an update on my Tumblr dash from the blog Kanji a Day* and or when there is an update on the Otomate website for game series I just translate the texts and pick up a few things here and there.

*Kanji a Day is a really nice blog, and as it’s name the blog updates with a Kanji per day and places the definition and Romanji as well.

Sometimes when I’m translating there are times when I don’t understand a certain kanji or the way it has been used, I use a Kanji dictionary or try to translate it to another language so I can understand it to the better.

Dictionary I use is RomajiDesu, they have a Kanji dictionary tab which is easy to use, for example, say you placed in a sentence in japanese, the translated result will be shown below and the Kanjis/Katakana/Hiragana will be shown with a underline, click on them and it will link you to the dictionary part with the definition of the word you clicked.

Another handy thing you can do is type in Romanji and convert it to Hiragana and Katakana on there! Super handy!

Another handy one I use is Google translate tool and press the “Speaker” icon to hear the words to see if I know the pronounciation of the Kanji and then translate.

And finally I learn Kanjis from otome games, they are a great source of entertainment and learning programs, who doesn’t want to hear ear melting voices and read along to it?

This is only if you have some grasp on Japanese by ear though, I can listen and talk but writing is my difficulty when it comes to Japanese, I am still learning myself :)

Summary:

Try to learn one Kanji a or few times a week, the blog I mentioned earlier is really great for this.

Find a good translator that shows Kanji/Romanji/Hiragana/Katakana when you translate things.

Find a dictionary that you are comfortable using, don’t just use whatever you are recommended, there are many translators out there, you just need to find the one that suits you the most.

If you have some understandings of pronunciations of the words, I’d recommend otome games, don’t go for the extreme like Ken ga Kimi or Hakuouki, during game play parts of the texts they use are olden day terms and sometimes that is a too big of a hurdle.

Start off simple, try AMNESIA, Diabolik Lovers and Binary Star? A good mix of Kanji/Hiragana/Katakana, that’s what I usually go for.

That’s it I think, I can’t really think of anything else at the moment or maybe it’s because I’m a little tired, it is close to 2AM for me, haha.
