English isn't my first language so maybe i misunderstood your post. What you describe with closing one eye to read isn't normal but the image jumping when you switch eyes by closing them definetly is. It's one way we create depth vision - the reason the jump happens is that we require both eyes for binocular horizontal disparity. Each eye has a slightly different angle und thus sees a bit different. The example used to teach this is usually looking at your thump and then closing each eye because it illistrates the jump in vision quite nicely though we usually don't notice in everyday life. What should happen however when you have both eyes open that both pictures integrate into one.
Actually the jumping is NOT normal. What is normal is the image shifting perspective. A slight switch of the angle, like you said. But the jump indicates binocular vision dysfunction, specifically convergence excess. Many people think the jump is normal because it’s normal to them. As a strabismic figuring out how to get her eyes to work together in her 40s… I think a lot of people don’t realise you’ve got little muscles that rotate your eyes.
And normally those muscles are nicely synchronised. Your eyes rotate together. If they aren’t, you get two images that are rotated relative to each other. This can be very annoying.
Mine are… intermittently synchronised. And apparently this is something at least partially / sometimes under my control. It’s particularly unpleasant with text. Imagine you have two images of the same line of text, and they’re subjectively in the same place… but the one from your left eye is rotated about 15 degrees clockwise relative to the image from your right eye. What you’re seeing is more like a flattened “x” than a horizontal line.
I haven’t seen anyone else mention this shit. Material on figuring out binocular vision as an adult is thin on the ground as it is, but rotation issues are really flying under the radar.
Also I’m wondering if this plays a role in dyslexia. ‘Cause, yeah, it can make reading very visually confusing. And how often is anyone even checking kids who have trouble reading for cyclotropia?
tfw when you have binocular vision dysfunction because you have ehler's danlos syndrome, so you have to go to a specialist eye doctor who is covered by insurance but not for the actual glasses so they're $900 but also bc you have bvd/eds you have dry eye so bad that even doing daily warm compresses and taking omega-3 supps and using eyedrops (inconsistently bc autistic sensory issues) isn't enough so you start doing this low level light therapy thing they have where you sit with an intense red light mask over your face once a week for four weeks and even after the second session (week 2) and check up with the doctor she already starts talking about how you'll still probably need the fancy prescription eye drops so you should start actually using your eye drops a few times a day so you'll be ready to use them FOUR TIMES A DAY when you get the prescription ones bc the light therapy ain't cutting it
