it has come to my attention that a ton of my problems are actually related to me being frighteningly similar to ronan niall lynch. magical gay catholic farmer goth trauma boys unite i guess

some birbverse ideas gathered after a brainstorming session on a discord server

most corvids live in flocks or "villages" of 30-50 birds on the average, each still covering a rather large territory

these corvids don't generally have a concept of names, instead they give "names" to their bonds with other members of the flock, similar as you call your sibling a sibling which describes your relationship as family members from the same parents, they address themselves as "the guy I trained as a rabbit herder with" or "the guy I met at the mountain" (this was inspired by something I've read a while ago about a person who raised a raven and the raven used his own name to call his owner too, as if he didn't consider the name his name but the name of the bond with his owner)

because corvids are loud as fuck, everyone is aware of everyone else's relationships and general events and history of the flock, they have zero concept of secrets and the collective memory of the flock is of extreme importance, 99% of their society works based on gossip. if you can't remember a detail about someone, just yell about it and someone will answer from the other side of the tree

this does not work as well in large flocks or "cities" that have simply too many members to keep track of, there is higher anonymity and most birds are known by personal names that are usually based on appearance and distinguishing traits

"village" corvids consider the idea of personal names shallow and self-centered, thinking it is better to know a person based on the shared detailed knowledge of interpersonal relationships and events, while "city" corvids think "village" corvids are gossipy hags with zero sense of privacy

"a name describes who you are, it lets people know about you" "but all my neighbors already know everything about me?"

while "city" birds are beginning to use writing, "village" birds speak in verse, which helps with remembering the vast amount of information about their flockmates and stories. A regular village crow would be able to recite the entirety of Homer's Illiad off the top of their head
