I know this concept has probably already been introduced but like

I mean just think about it.

Zuko's great grandfather basically invented homophobia

So of course, Zuko feels that if the the people of the fire nation find out their new fire lord is gay, when he already goes against most concepts that their previous ones introduced, there would probably be an outrage.

So Zuko's probably gonna have to let his new rule just be that for a bit, let the citizens warm up to him, and then he'll reveal it.

When he realizes he's into guys, he's still kind of dating Mai (sometime after/during the boiling rock) because whabam, what a surprise, he's been hit by the irresistible Sokka charm.

At first, he tries to break up with Mai, not wanting to drag her into this plan of his unknowingly, but of course by that time her gaydar had gone off and she knows.

So when she asks him about it, he just admits it because she's chill, and then woah, she's gay too, what a shocker.

They're both chill, it's all good, but then they realize they can help each other in this situation. Zuko can go get a man *COUGH COUGH* SOKKA *COUFHCOUGHCOUGH* and Mai can go date Ty Lee because they're adorable, all while keeping the cover of being in a straight relationship

Obviously this isn't canon, but I like to imagine around 1-2 years after his becoming fire lord they finally reveal their true nature and they make the gays legal :3

Idk exactly how I'd explain Izumi, but I'm gonna assume they were pressured into having a child and didn't actually reveal the truth until after they had her.

I also think that both Sokka and Suki are bi and they're like super chill when they break up.

They're still like besties

It is a personal favorite headcanon of mine that anytime Suki appears in any of my fics she has to sit in chairs in the most bisexual way possible at all times

because it's fun and also pride month, I am presenting to you:

my ATLA romantic/sexual identity headcanons

for some of the characters!

let's start with

Toph!!

No other character strikes me more aromatic than Toph! I don't think she's the person for a romantic relationship but her platonic relationships are very important to her (even though she's not the most touchy-feely to begin with).

Katara:

Katara is a bisexual (but slightly prefers men) Since when does she know? She probably always has, one of her first crushes was a girl from her village! As for now, (in my head at least) she is happily dating Zuko.

Zuko

Zuko too likes both sexes! Unlike Katara he is a demi bisexual/demi biromanric though, can only feel sexual/romantic attraction to people he has an important bond with. Therefore his partner (in my headcanon- Katara) is also definitely his best friend!

Ty Lee

THE disaster bi. Need i say more. Currently dating Mai, but she did have a crush on Sokka once.

Suki

Another one of the bisexual family. She grew up mostly among girls, and therefore had the one or other crush on girls from her warrior group (and half the warrior group had a crush on her tbh) growing up. Now she is happily in love with Sokka!

Sokka

He gives me mixed vibes. A tricky one. One option is that he is also, a bisexual. The other option is that he gives off MASSIVE bi wife energy because he is a wonderful supportive boyfriend to Suki and her vibes have rubbed off on him. Whether he is bi or not, he does give off bi wife energy either way.

Aang

Aang is pan.

He is the avatar, has lived a thousand lives and has had wives, husbands, partners in all his past lives. He does not care about a person's gender, just their heart.

Azula

Also a tricky one. I think Azula might be a lesbian or if not that, 95% attracted to women and 5% to men. If that's the case, she still refers to herself as gay because she's done with men's shit.

Mai

I am unsure about her romantic orientation, but she is definitely asexual (doesn't feel sexual attraction) but she is in a very loving relationship with Ty Lee! So she is definitely sapphic, but since I do think she was in love with Zuko for a while, she is probably a biromantic!
