because it's fun and also pride month, I am presenting to you:

my ATLA romantic/sexual identity headcanons

for some of the characters!

let's start with

Toph!!

No other character strikes me more aromatic than Toph! I don't think she's the person for a romantic relationship but her platonic relationships are very important to her (even though she's not the most touchy-feely to begin with).

Katara:

Katara is a bisexual (but slightly prefers men) Since when does she know? She probably always has, one of her first crushes was a girl from her village! As for now, (in my head at least) she is happily dating Zuko.

Zuko

Zuko too likes both sexes! Unlike Katara he is a demi bisexual/demi biromanric though, can only feel sexual/romantic attraction to people he has an important bond with. Therefore his partner (in my headcanon- Katara) is also definitely his best friend!

Ty Lee

THE disaster bi. Need i say more. Currently dating Mai, but she did have a crush on Sokka once.

Suki

Another one of the bisexual family. She grew up mostly among girls, and therefore had the one or other crush on girls from her warrior group (and half the warrior group had a crush on her tbh) growing up. Now she is happily in love with Sokka!

Sokka

He gives me mixed vibes. A tricky one. One option is that he is also, a bisexual. The other option is that he gives off MASSIVE bi wife energy because he is a wonderful supportive boyfriend to Suki and her vibes have rubbed off on him. Whether he is bi or not, he does give off bi wife energy either way.

Aang

Aang is pan.

He is the avatar, has lived a thousand lives and has had wives, husbands, partners in all his past lives. He does not care about a person's gender, just their heart.

Azula

Also a tricky one. I think Azula might be a lesbian or if not that, 95% attracted to women and 5% to men. If that's the case, she still refers to herself as gay because she's done with men's shit.

Mai

I am unsure about her romantic orientation, but she is definitely asexual (doesn't feel sexual attraction) but she is in a very loving relationship with Ty Lee! So she is definitely sapphic, but since I do think she was in love with Zuko for a while, she is probably a biromantic!

In honor of my aro positivity post gaining another bucket of notes the other day, here's some characters in A:TLA who I headcanon as arospec! I think Suki is alloaro, Azula is a grey/frayromantic lesbian, Katara is demiromantic and Toph is aroace.

every member of the gaang is aspec and i'm going to tell you why whether or not you want me to

- aang: aroace. this one is obvious, and if you've followed me for any length of time you know i love spreading aroace aang propaganda. aunt wu practically makes it cannon in the fortuneteller episode- she doesn't see any romance in his future. also, aang's colour palate is the aroace flag, so that's always a plus.

- sokka: purely vibes, and not canon compliant in any way, but he's demiromantic. I don't really have an explanation for this, but he just strikes me as someone who forms deep emotional attachments before wanting anything more.

- katara: she's grayace and you can't tell me otherwise. she might be feeling more attraction one day and less the next, and she just vibes with it. change is part of her element. romance, however, is a priority in her life. physical attraction, on the other hand, is not.

- toph: alloaro. I love the concept of a toph whose relationships with her (found) family are the most important in her life, who maybe has a qpr with someone, who raises her children with support from the rest of the gaang. it make me ridiculously happy and fits her character so so well!! she is quite literally a strong independent woman, and doesn't need a partner to be happy and feel fulfilled.

- suki: also alloaro!! or maybe grayaro, whatever you like. suki seems to me a person who really doesn't care that much about romance. her family and friends are a true priority for her, and while i think she wouldn't mind a qpr or a romantic relationship, it's sort of at the back of her mind. her duty always comes first.

- zuko: ace, and possibly arospec. my boy is busy regaining his honour. chasing the avatar. conquering his internal conflict. building trust with the gaang. running a country. you're gonna tell me he has time to worry about seggs and romance?? look me in the eye and say it. but in all seriousness, zuko is a hopeless (but aspec) romantic who loves attraction in novels and plays, but not in his own life. he just doesn't have time for that.

ATLA queer headcanons

Aang: Aang doesn’t use labels. He doesn’t really care about what pronouns people use for him, or what people gender him as. He usually introduces himself with he/him pronouns because it’s what other people have used for him, but he likes they/them, she/her, and neopronouns just fine. He doesn’t use orientation labels either.

Katara: Non-SAM demiromantic trans girl. She transitioned young, and experiences little or no dysphoria because she was never taught a woman had to act or look a certain way. More of my thoughts on demiro Katara here.

Sokka: Bisexual trans boy. He/they all the way. He transitioned young but a little later than Katara—around 9 years old. He has a lot of dysphoria because of the pressure and expectations he puts on himself.

Suki: Bisexual trans woman. She always knew she wanted to be a Kyoshi Warrior, and eventually mustered the courage to ask to join them when she was 11. They accepted her immediately and she quickly rose in the ranks through her training and dedication.

Yue: Trans ace lesbian. @whenyourfavouritedies introduced me to the trans!Yue headcanon and to the concept of Yue naming herself for the moon because she loves the moon, which is brilliant. @that-was-anticlimactic introduced me to ace!Yue which, ah. Incredible.

Toph: Aroallo. She doesn’t really label her sexual attraction other than allo because her aro identity is much more important to her.

Zuko: Gay-oriented demiromantic asexual. @zukkaclawthorne introduced me to the concept of demi Zuko, and I am forever grateful.

Azula: Lesbian. She is a lesbian.

Mai: Biromantic asexual. @artboy-mlm introduced me to asexual Mai and I am 100% on board this train. Here is an elaboration on asexual!Mai.

Ty Lee: Trans girl Ty Lee. I can see her as lesbian or pan, but definitely wlw in some way.
