WHERE 2019 Richmond Jewish Food Festival
(Weinstein Jewish Community Center
@ 5403 Monument Ave, Richmond, VA 23226)
For the past five years I've been joking about how badly I miss Jewish food from NY and how I wish we could entice more Jewish people to come down to Richmond because they're as rare as unicorns down here. Apparently, this whole time, I've been wrong. I just hadn't found the Weinstein Jewish Community Center yet. But their Jewish Food Festival popped up on Facebook about a week ago, so I decided to make it my first food adventure for 2019.
The place was packed when I got there-- lines out the door. There was shopping, music, community and of course, SO MUCH FOOD. I headed straight for the "Israeli Dishes" booth and bought kefta (ground beef kabobs off the stick, wrapped with Israeli salad made of hummus, slaw and tomato), tzimmes (yams with raisins) and then over to the "Jewish Bakery" booth for sufganiyah (powdered Jewish donut munchkins). Most of those I couldn't pronounce at all and just had to spell when requesting them from the booths.
Everyone was so welcoming! And they didn't let me go home without taking one of their kosher cookbooks, so I have yet another souvenir from my food travels.
(Sidenote: I STILL miss bagels though... Would it be wrong to approach the folks at the community center and ask them to take me to their bagels?)

2019... later...
This package was waiting for me when I got home from my Disney trip. I'm pretty sure the chocolate has a melted, but I hope everything's okay. I haven't tried any of the chocolate yet. I'm still looking through the falafel flavored puffs, sesame candy with pistachios, baklava made from a company in Nazareth, and all the Hebrew writing on the packages that I can't decipher. Mazel Tov!
