Bob Jones University is guaranteeing free tuition by offering deep discounts and leaning on federal and state funds.

Even this week, BJU is promising faculty lay-offs (to take effect at the end of the school year).

These two things do not make sense together. You do not lower costs while eliminating your work force.

It tells us one thing: BJU is desperate.

WutBJU just happened to stumble on a quotation from the 2011-12 Employee handbook:

Unions Bob Jones University’s goal is to provide good working conditions and to foster honest personal relationships for all employees. By working together we’ve been successful in accomplishing this goal without the presence of a union, and we prefer to keep it that way.

At BJU our goal is to treat employees fairly and equally and as individuals. Every employee is an important part of BJU. Employees are encouraged to talk directly to anyone in positions of management/leadership, and those in the management/leadership roles will speak directly with employees. Our commitment is to provide employees with benefits, personal respect and dignity. We recognize that each employee is integral in making BJU successful. When problems arise, we welcome employees to express their concerns and suggestions directly through their line of authority within their management/ leadership team. We will work together to understand and correct the situation.

Yeah, but the "management/leadership team" can't be found!

So let's review:

BJU's back campus housing is old.

But BJU didn't own all of it until 1998.

BJU didn't skimp on the rent they charged.

BJU is recently razing houses.

It seems that BJU is planning on selling off that back property.

That property has been very profitable for them.

The taxes back there are somewhat flaky.

Here's the tax bill, btw.

So that back campus could be very profitable for a financially struggling BJU.

In order for that to happen, however, BJU needs to clear it. Clear the property and clear the people in the property.

That's what it seems like they are doing because the rent they are charging the retirees living back campus?

They can't afford it. It's that high.

On Monday, November 14, 2022, three +++Positive+++ faculty members met with three BJU Trustees.

Now it's likely that these are the three Trustees since they are the local Trustees:

Mr. Jerry Morgan, Chair, Student Development & Discipleship Committee

Dr. Jean Saito

Mr. Tim Stanley (Vice Chair)*, Chair, Finance & Audit Committee

I give them props for considering all the options and speaking up. Speaking up is good and the Board should listen to the Faculty.

Dear [BJU Alumni],

As you'll note, I'm returning the gift card you sent. I wish I could consider the gift an act of love and not one of protest. I have some idea of what's behind the sending of gift cards to various faculty by a group of disgruntled grads - one of my colleagues at Unusual Films was sent one.

I have no need for financial help--the Lord has greatly blessed me and my family here at the University. In fact, I consider myself a rich man - blessed with so many wonderful things and so many of those things are part of my work and ministry here at Bob Jones. I have two wonderful children, whose education was top notch and completely paid for. They both learned scriptural principles for following the Lord they love while here at BJU. My wife has needed medical care for her cancer and once again the Lord has provided so abundantly through the University and its top notch medical care.

____, I'm saddened by your participation in what appears to be bitterness against the Lord's ministry here at BJU. I remember my first impression of you - you were one of our testimony students in the mission trip section of the previous multi-image. You had such potential for the Lord and such vibrancy for Christ. I could see that you loved Him and wanted to serve Him. Then I continued to watch your life and testimony in your work and service at Mount Calvary. Your love for Him and your willingness to reach the lost (even to the purchasing of a home in Poe Mill) was such a blessing. "Ye did run well; who (or what) did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth?" (Gal 5:7). Where is your love for Him that is so evidenced in 1 Cor. 13 and was evident in your life? Please consider carefully the ministry and testimony of Christ that you're now proclaiming to the world? Is He pleased?

I hope this short note can be used by the Lord to encourage you to return to that love and devotion that was so evident in your life and was such a blessing to so many.

In the March and April Accords, the BJU Faculty newsletter, Bob Jones University announced the retirement of several employees.

BJU saved the announcements of the retirements BJU was forcing for the April publication. But one step at a time.

Whom did they announce as retiring in the March 2017 Accord? 

David Beale, retired December 2016 with 37 years of service (Dr. Beale identifies his retirement as starting in 2012. He has not been in any yearbooks since.)

Dan Calnon, retired from Photo Services in December 2016 with 49½ years of service.

Peggy Davenport, retired from the BJU Press in January 2017 with 38½ years of service

Janis Hyde, retired from the BJU Press in January 2017 with 23½ years of service 

Charles Gardner, retired from Information Technologies in January 2017 with 45¼ years of service

Ellen Penicaro, retired from the BJU Press in December 2016 with 35¼ years of service

Claude Stine, retired from Facilities Management in February 2017 with 29½ years of service
