Dr. Yosef Alfredo Antonio Ben-Jochannan (1918–2015), also known as Dr. Ben was a prominent historian, educator, author, and advocate of African scholarship. He was born on December 31, 1918, in Gondar, Ethiopia, with Ethiopian-Jewish heritage from his father and Puerto Rican heritage from his mother.

Dr. Ben was an expert in ancient African history, particularly regarding the civilizations of the Nile Valley and their contributions to world culture. He authored over 40 books and numerous articles, many emphasizing the African origins of Western civilization and the contributions of African people to science, philosophy, and culture. His works often challenged Eurocentric narratives and sought to instil pride and awareness in African and African-descended communities.

He taught at institutions such as Cornell University and was widely known for his engaging lectures and tours of Egypt, which highlighted African contributions to ancient Egyptian civilization.

Dr. Ben passed away on March 19, 2015, in New York City at the age of 96, leaving behind a legacy as a transformative figure in African and African diasporic studies. 🇪🇹🇵🇷

Who is your favorite Black Scholar?

Undoubtedly my choice would be Prof Kaba Kamene. Bobby Hemmitt overall would be my favorite lecturer but Kaba would be my favorite academia based scholar. Kaba essentially does what Bobby Did (combine metaphysical and historically accurate research with scholarship). Kaba does it beautifully with paying homage to former black scholars and ancient black history. And finds a way to make it understandable to modern people. Definitely check out 3 of his recent books which are all good reads👌🏿

Only thing I disagree really with him on is the evolution theory but I ultimately had to understand why he believed that way . And ultimately not mad at his beliefs and doesn't take away any love I got for his work💯

I’m literally posting this everywhere because this was 6 years in the making! I worked my ass off to get this piece of paper. I dropped out of high school my senior year after being told I was just a few hour short of the units needed to graduate. Got my GED years later (I think damn near 4 years). Put off going to community college year after year, it was so bad my dad just literally said, “Ok.” Like it was nothing because he heard it year after year of excuses about me either missing a date to be admitted or not getting classes when the reality was I was scared and didn’t want to go back to school despite me finding the profession I was called for. Then… my daughter was born. She motivated me to go back to school. I had a great job, lost that job. Had to start all over again. Worked far, went to school at nights so my days were longer than the usual (4am-10pm). At one point I had THREE jobs! Went to school on campus and online. Slept in my car overnight. Showered at the gym. I went through it all for this piece of paper just so I can make her proud and show her that just because it’s difficult doesn’t mean it’s impossible. Now that I have it, I feel like I’ve just taken my first step to realizing my true potential and making those dreams happen.

Dr. Amos N. Wilson (1941–1995) was a Pan-African psychologist, scholar, and activist dedicated to the empowerment of African people. Born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, he experienced the harsh realities of segregation, which shaped his understanding of systemic oppression. He earned a Ph.D. in psychology from Fordham University and became a prolific thinker in African-centered psychology and social theory.

Wilson emphasized the psychological impacts of white supremacy, urging Black people to reclaim their minds and reject internalized racism. He linked economic empowerment to liberation, advocating for collective wealth-building and the establishment of Black-owned businesses. His works also stressed the need for Afrocentric education, designed to teach Black children their history, culture, and responsibility to their communities.

As a speaker and writer, Wilson combined psychology, history, and sociology to analyze systemic oppression. His most influential works include "Blueprint for Black Power," which outlines strategies for economic and political self-determination, and "The Falsification of Afrikan Consciousness," which critiques colonial mentalities.

Dr. Wilson passed away in 1995, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire Pan-Africanists. His ideas remain a call to action for unity, self-reliance, and collective advancement among people of African descent.
