Summary: On a road trip with their brothers, Black and Honey end up sharing a motel room, and there's only one bed. (Blue and Slim are dating, and these two are getting there)
Warnings: a bit of insecurity/doubting of feelings, but no. major self-deprecation
This is based off of a request for @thycutterofmuchcookiez that was sent to me ages ago, I hope you like it! I felt like it was time for some HoneyVenom :)

Honey looked at the thin, small bed in front of him, then turned back to the skeleton standing next to him. Black was still holding on to their suitcases, standing just as still as Honey had been a moment ago. He’d insisted that since Honey had driven them for most of the day, he could carry the bags. Honey was feeling a bit tired, so he hadn’t argued the point.
“D’you think the front desk made a mistake? This doesn’t look like a queen bed to me.” Honey honestly wouldn’t care, but after spending hours behind a steering wheel, being able to stretch out properly sounded like heaven.
He idly wondered if the other two were having the same problem. Blue had, of course, wanted to room with his new boyfriend on this little road trip. Honey wasn’t sure if he trusted Slim, but as long as he didn’t hear any headboards banging, he could live with it. After all, it would be a bit hypocritical, considering how he was feeling towards—
“I shall call them right away.” Black’s voice sounded stiff, the tone firmer than usual. He had already been unhappy when the motel where they had pulled in warned that they only had a couple of vacant rooms left. While Honey was usually amused by Black’s insistence on getting only the best for their little group, he was too tired to enjoy it tonight.
“‘Kay, I’m gonna go freshen up.” Honey took his bag from Black, dropping it on the end of the bed sitting in the right corner of the room.
He unzipped it, pulling out a towel and the toiletry kit Blue had insisted he pack. Honey wasn’t planning to do a deep bone scrub during this trip, but he appreciated the consideration. He headed for the small en-suite bathroom, hearing the sharp click of phalanges as Black punched in the number for the reception.
Honey did his best to not pay attention to the lively conversation on the other side of the bathroom door. With such a lively little brother, it was easier than it would be for most. He turned the sink on full blast, uncaring of how the water splashed over himself and dripped down the counter.
He kept his pants on, only washing the most important places on his torso. Skeletons didn’t really get dirty, but magic sweat still left behind a residue, and yellowed his bones if he let it build up enough. It was soothing to scrub himself, and feel the stickiness of the day wash off of his bones.
Right as Black’s voice got loud enough to be classified as a “yell” by most normal standards, Honey dunked his head under the tap. The water rushed around and through his bones, trickling through his jaw as he opened it. The relentless drumming sound didn’t fully down out Black’s voice, but it meant Honey couldn’t properly make out what he was saying. Honey stayed like that, moving his face back and forth slightly so the water washed through every cavity in his skull.
When Honey finally finished, he towelled himself off quickly. There was still a bit of water clinging to his vertebrae and the inside of his skull, but it was fine. He’d just let it drip dry. He wrapped the towel around his neck, letting it hang down over his ribs. He usually slept shirtless, but he’d brought a couple of thin tank tops just in case Black was uncomfortable.
Black was sitting on one of the beds, his arms crossed. Judging by the extra-deep scowl on his face, the call hadn’t gone well. Black looked up at Honey, his eyelights flickering slightly. He blinked, then quickly spoke.
“The human at the front desk confirmed that there are no other beds available. If you are to be driving tomorrow, then you need to be properly rested. I will not risk a road accident.” Black stood up, his hands moving stiffly to his sides. “Therefore, I shall sleep on the floor. You may push the two beds together for a more comfortable experience. If you lie diagonally, I am sure that you will be able to find an adequate sleeping position.”
Black walked around to the other side of the twin bed he’d been sitting on, and began pushing it. The bed shuddered, scraping against the carpeted floor. Honey just stared for a moment, shocked by Black’s determined tone. It was as if he’d decided this, and now Honey just had to go along with it. The carpet was incredibly thin and probably stained to hell, but the neat freak Black was still planning on sleeping on it? He knew Black wanted to help, but the thought of his crush languishing on the hard floor while he got the bed just didn’t sit right with Honey.
“Come on, there’s no need for that. I’ve slept in worse—” Honey was cut off by Black’s intense glare. “Fine, push the beds together. We can just share then.”
Black’s skull snapped around to face Honey, and his eyelights had shrunk into tiny pinpoints of light. “You… want to share a bed with me?”
“What? I used to share a bed with my brother all the time, and you two are basically the same size.” Honey held his hands up, suddenly feeling very defensive. “I haven’t done it in a while, but it’s not uncommon to share a bed with a friend on a trip. It’s not like you’re gonna shank me in my sleep.”
While Honey might have thought otherwise when they had first met, he was not confident that Black wasn’t secretly trying to murder him or his brother. They had spent a lot of time together, both in larger gatherings and on their own, when Blue and Slim wanted to go out together. Honey suddenly wondered if he was overestimating this relationship, his one-sided feelings making him blind enough to mistake Black’s simple tolerance of his presence for interest.
“We are friends, aren’t we?” More doubts began creeping into Honey’s mind, and he hated himself for it. “I get that things are different where you’re from, but can you really not trust me for one night?”
“No!” Black yelled, surprising them both. “I mean—yes, I can trust you. We are… friends. All right, let’s share a slightly less awful bed.”
Honey chose not to dwell on the meaningful pause. This shitty motel was not the time or the place to dive into his feelings. He would just have to push all of this down, and maybe book an extra therapy session after this trip to process the rejection.
“Okay, cool.” Honey looked around the room, awkwardly fiddling with a loose string on his shorts. “So, do you wanna head to bed now, or…”
“It would be best to go now, yes.” Black began pushing the twin bed again, moving it so it was closer to the middle of the room. “I shall go get ready for bed. Please push your twin up, and then arrange the comforters however you’d like.”
Once Black had stepped into the bathroom, Honey covered his face with his hands. Debating the theory over bed inequality was fine, but fuck, sharing a bed with his definitely-unreciprocated crush was another. Honey wasn’t sure if he should be elated at this once-in-a-lifetime chance, or horrified that Black might discover his secret and think he was taking advantage of him. He would scream, but he didn’t want Black rushing in to see what was wrong.
After several minutes of internal screaming, Honey decided to do what Black had asked. He moved his bed over, adjusting the two beds so they were evenly lined up. He stripped the comforters off each bed, and only left the sheets. It would probably be best if he used one sheet, and Black used the other; Honey had an unfortunate tendency to steal all the covers during the night and cocoon himself.
He found some extra towels folded in a cabinet inside of the room’s tiny closet, and used it to tie the inside lower leg of each bed together. That way the beds might shift, but they wouldn’t actually split apart and create a canyon in the middle of the night. After a bit of poking around with some bones, Honey managed to tie another knot around the top inside legs of the beds as well. He wiggled one bed slightly with his hands, and the knots stayed in place. Good.
Honey then threw on a shirt and some pyjama shorts, leaving the bedding piled on the twin next to him. He laid down on the bed, letting his feet dangle off the edge. Black was taking a long time in the bathroom; longer than Honey had expected. Then again, an appearance-focused guy like him probably had a whole beauty routine. Heh, maybe he even used dental floss to clean each individual vertebrae. Honey quickly shook his mind off of that train of thought; imagining Black’s fully-exposed spine was a line that didn’t feel right to cross when they were going to be sleeping together.
Black finally stepped out of the bathroom, revealing that he had changed into a set of black silk pyjamas, with a purple collar and sleeve cuffs. It looked nice, but Honey bit his tongue before he made things weird. He just pulled his blanket over to sit on the other side of him, and patted the bed.
They exchanged an awkward “good night,” and then Black turned off the lights. Honey was able to fit on the bed when he laid diagonally, and he turned so that he wasn’t facing Black. He arched his back slightly, trying to give Black as much room as possible. They were so close that even if they weren’t touching, Honey could sense the way Black was moving. He felt Black pull his sheet over himself, curling up so he was in a fetal position. Honey squeezed his pillow with both hands, pressing his skull into it harder.
Honey was tired, but his mind was racing too much for him to sleep. This was a familiar problem, though he wished that just for tonight, it would let him be. Honey forced himself to slow his breathing, listening intently to Black. His breathing was slower too, but Honey couldn’t tell if he was still awake or not.
Well, that didn’t matter. Honey’s skull was full of memories. The sheer determination on Black’s face as he trained, the quiet stubbornness on his face as he continued his physical training, his triumphant grin when he won during one of their game nights… He hadn’t been very expressive when they had first met, and Honey had watched with pleasure as his cold exterior finally chipped away. Without meaning to, he thought back to the way Black had looked at him just now. He had clearly been feeling something, but Honey was still worried that he was misinterpreting this. How could he know if Black wanted him as a romantic partner, or if he was just happy to have a friend?
Black suddenly shifted behind him, making Honey hold his breath. Honey’s sockets widened as he felt Black’s strong body press against him, his ribs against Honey’s back. One arm tentatively laid over Honey’s waist, and when Honey didn’t react, Black relaxed. The dead weight of his arm was lighter than Honey had expected, free of any metal armour or the thick leather jacket he’d begun to wear in its place.
This was too much. Honey had to check out what was happening, but he didn’t want to accidentally wake Black up. He made a soft noise, shifting a bit. Black’s arm didn’t move, and his breathing didn’t change. He must be solidly asleep, and the thought of him naturally clinging to Honey while he was vulnerable made Honey’s cheeks heat up.
Honey shifted, then turned around in one smooth motion. He kept his eyes half-closed, dimming his eyelights as much as possible. It was much harder to see, but Honey could make out that Black was awake and staring at him. He didn’t remove his arm, instead holding Honey’s waist a bit harder.
Black sat up slightly, bringing their faces closer together. He was clearly awake, his eyelights sharp as they bored into Honey’s face.
“You aren’t a very convincing fake sleeper.” Black’s voice was much quieter than normal, and slightly husky.
Honey gulped, smiling nervously as he fully opened his eyes. “Well, you weren’t good at pretending either. Sleeping skeletons don’t move that much to cuddle.”
Black smiled back at him. “No, I suppose they don’t. Do you want me to stop?”
Honey’s smooth tongue felt like it was made of styrofoam. As he scrambled for the right words, something finally fell out of his mouth. “Nuh-uh, no. I-I don’t mind. Go ahead.”
Black leaned in more, pressing his chest against Honey’s. He steadied his breathing, exhaling every time Honey inhaled. Their bodies were pressed together, but Black wasn’t resting his weight on Honey. He wasn’t trapped, and he knew that if he really wanted to, he could easily push Black away.
“Are you sure?” There was only a slight shift in Black’s tone, but since he was usually so confident, the insecurity was plain as day.
“Yeah.” Honey closed his eyes, tilting his head down.
He and Black met in the middle. At first the kiss was just a soft peck, their teeth barely pressing against each other. Then, as they both realized the other wasn’t going to pull away, things got more intense. Black’s sharp teeth were slightly prickly, but Honey liked the feeling of it. He opened his mouth, forming his tongue. Black quickly took him up on the invitation, forcing his tongue into Honey’s mouth like it was the end of the world. Honey rested one hand on Black’s shoulder, encouraging him to slow down.
After the first kiss there were more. Hungry mouths pressed against each other, tongues and teeth clashing. Black’s hands stayed where they were, but he squeezed Honey’s hip as he sucked on Honey’s tongue. Honey felt his need rising, but he pushed it back. He didn’t want to rush things; not with Black. This was more than enough for now. He focused on Black, running his hands slowly from Black’s neck down his back. It felt like heaven to be so close, and Honey wanted to stay like this forever.
Finally, they both took a moment to rest. Honey laid his head back on the pillow. He felt a laugh bubbling in his chest, but if he let it out he knew he would cackle loud enough to wake everyone else up. He felt like he was weightless, and only Black’s weight was keeping him tethered to the bed. He could take on the world, but he was brought back down by Black’s hands on his face.
“Beautiful,” Black murmured, brushing his fingers over Honey’s cheekbone.
“Uh, thanks.” Honey had never really seen himself as beautiful. He knew that objectively, he was probably slightly above average, but the he liked way Black said it. “You too.”
Black smiled, and fuck, someone so sharp should not be able to look that tender. “You’re welcome.” He glanced over at the alarm clock behind Honey, then sighed. “We should probably go to bed now.”
“Five more minutes?” Honey suggested. He didn’t want to start worrying about what had just happened, and kissing Black sounded like a pretty good way of blocking out any lingering nasty thoughts.
“Three, and before you argue up, that is my final offer.” Black frowned at Honey, but his eyes were still happy.
“I can get behind that.” Honey wiggled his browbones, and Black sighed.
“What am I going to do with you?”
“Kiss me again?”
“You are an insufferable smartass.” Black said, but his voice had no bite.
He did kiss Honey again, snuggling up close. The bed was more than big enough for the two of them if they laid close, and Black’s closeness was finally comfortable. Things might still be awkward for tomorrow, but the barrier had been crossed for tonight. Honey rested his skull on top of Black’s, and wrapped both arms around him. He let Black snuggle into his chest, his breath warm against Honey’s collarbone as they relaxed together.
