Welcome to Black History Month. This month I am celebrating and honouring black teachers from around the world. Often in yoga culture people of colour and other marginalized populations are overlooked for our contributions to healing our communities. I want to shout out those who folks who are making a change, creating brave spaces for all of us to practice and are leaders in the community. Today is this first day of #Kwanzaa I am honored to produce and host a Kwanzaa program today focused on healing at the African American Research Library and Cultural Center entitled, Towards Love: Healing our Community Through Self-Care. This Kwanzaa I am also one of the co-hosts of Kwanzaa Yoga Challenge®️, created by @blackmindsinmeditation . Today we focus our intention on striving for and maintaining unity in the family & community. @maya.breuer is our host for today and she asked us to reflect on What does it look like for you? Today was just that. People coming together to heal, love, and build community. Today's event would not be possible without collaboration and unity. ⚫️The 1st Principle of Kwanzaa is Umoja (Unity). Tree Pose aka Vrikshasana was chosen in observance of #Ujoma. There is power in numbers. Umoja stresses the importance of standing for and supporting the family, community, nation and race. We, like trees, grow stronger when planted and nourished in supportive soil. It facilitates the growth of branches and blooms symbolic of future generations, and the impact of our actions in the world. The roots of the tree depict our deeply rooted connections to our families, ancestors, our tribe, communities, earth, God and our #ROOTCHAKRA. The tree assures us that we are not alone and symbolizes our deep connections. Each tree is different in some way and serves its own individual purpose. You, like a tree, have a purpose to serve for the greater good of the people. ⚫️There are many different variations for tree pose. Choose the one that works best for you. ⚫️Stand tall and straight with arms by the side of your body. Shift weight slightly into left foot remembering to breathe throughout this asana. Bend the right knee touching the left ankle with the sole of your right foot, staying here or moving your foot up to your side calf, high up on your inner thigh or lotus (do what feels best for you).
