let's adventure with gege!
Has anybody ever thought how much power Kai and Nya's genetics carry?
So far, their family has...
- the elemental power of fire
- the elemental power of water
- the elemental power of lightning (if Jay and Nya do get married)
- god's grandson as their adoptive sibling
- the elemental power of amber (if things work out between Kai and Skylor)
- chen's properties, island, cult and food empire (again, if Skylor)
- Cliff Gordon's properties and fortune
- the genetics of the two people who built the Time Blades and mastered the elemental power of time
- the genetics of the boy who reforged the Golden Weapons
- the genetics of the girl who turned into the ocean
- the royal bloodline of the Munce
- some sort of political power over the Geckle society
And I'm not even taking Monstrosity!Kai or whatever that shit might do to his bloodline into account...
Like, no wonder these two are losing their powers every two seasons. If they were allowed their true potential, they'd be unstoppable.
If any of them have kids, I fear for what they might bring into the world.
Samurai shipping and opposite shipping are so fun together. Cause like both sibling’s type is nindroids? How did that happen? Is it just something about growing up surrounded by all that metal at the forge? (Now I’m picturing them as little kids sleeping with like samurai helmets instead of teddy bears, metal as comfort without parents to hold them.)
obsessed with the thought of Ninjago's Underworld being a metaphor for death as well, half because of the angst of Kai losing his baby sister to the literal personification of Death and doing anything in his power to bring her back to the land of the living (Demeter and Persephone and metaphors and all that). But also half because of the laughs, because imagine seeing all of that from the outside perspective of one of those rice farmers on Ignacia.
The villagers probably think that Nya died that day, and they also haven't seen her big brother since then, so they hear that he tried to save her and they assume he got himself killed by walking down to Hell himself. Only for the siblings to come back a few years later, full on ninja gear, manipulating nature itself and driving on mechs, and they're all like, "wtf, we thought you were DEAD, where have you been??" And Nya's like, "don't worry, I got better :)" and Kai's like "yeah, we've been living on a flying boat with that crazy old man who came by the shop a while ago, we're just here to pick up some of our stuff, anyway byeee, we'll be back for the next Day of the Departed"
And the villarges are like. A bit shocked but they shrug it off by the end, cause okay, at least this can't get any weirder :))
And then a couple of years later the siblings' fucking dead PARENTS show up---
Kai whenever Nya is remotely in danger:
"I raised this kid. She's the only family I have and I love her so much"
"I'm gonna save her and I'm gonna kill anyone that stands in my way."
"Oh fsm what if she's dead???"
"Please god let her be okay"
"My sister is actually amazing and she's a genius, she should be the one doing this."
"Everything I did, I did to protect her"
"I would literally die for her and go down the underworld to save her"
"DON'T YOU DARE TOUCH MY SISTER"
Kai when Nya is present:
"lol you are a weirdo"
"and so is your idiot boyfriend"
*tries to kill her with perfume*
thinking a lot about Ray Ninjago and Maya Ninjago actually
They were enslaved for years. Them going out into the daylight for the first time in years without chains around their wrists, walking around without something weighing them down, sitting at the monastery for the first time and trying to process the fact that they're free now and back with their kids.
Them reuning with their kids at such a tense moment, right after Wu going missing. How long did Kai and Nya stay with their parents to catch up and reconnect and cry before they had to leave? Before they told their parents that they couldn't go back home with them and needed to go on dangerous missions and find their master?
Do they know that Kai and Nya grew up alone all these years? Or do they think that they were under Wu's care, or that somebody from the village took them in? I can just picture Ray saying "I'm glad Wu took good care of you" and Kai and Nya look at each other and wonder how they're supposed to tell them.
Maya being absolutely furious once she learns that Wu and Garmadon kept the true nature of their powers a secret from them for so long, that they didn't even tell Nya that she was an elemental master until it was convenient. They find Wu and she's polite enough to wait until he's old again to beat the absolute crap out of him, because that was her daughter, and how dare he take that from her.
Them being friends with Wu. Did Wu know they were missing before he went to find Kai? Why didn't he come before? Did they wanted to put some distance from their ninja life in order to raise their kids?
Kai and Nya seemed to believe they were dead, and not hold any resentment towards them for leaving. Why? Did someone at the village tell them they were dead? Did they imagine them leaving and chose to believe they didn't have a choice, that they weren't alive anymore? They didn't have a choice, but how would the kids know that?
Imagine going through hell. Imagine being enslaved for years, not being let out into the world, not getting to see your kids grow up, not even to know that they're okay. Imagine once being one of the most powerful human beings on earth and then losing that power to your children and just trusting that they'll be able to keep themselves alive, to take care of each other. Now imagine going through all of that with the person you love the most.
The timeline is a mess, but if you decide to take it into account, they are at least 50+ or 60+ years old. They had their kids past 40. Did they want to have children before Maya got pregnant with Kai? Was it in their plans? Did they wait so long because they didn't want their powers to abandon them so quickly, or did they try for years and didn't manage to do it until they were already pretty old?
Just the concept of Kai and Nya having parents who are already older than the average and having missed most of the time they have with them. The idea of them being aware that they already lost so much time and they will not have a lot more with their kids, and most of that time they will spend going off on ninja missions. The concept of them wielding the Time Blades at the point they realize this, and wondering if they might use their power to make themselves younger.
We know the Sons of Garmadon were hunting down Elemental Masters in season 9. Did they go after the only former ones that we know of? Were Ray and Maya so broken by the thought of Kai's death that they were captured so easily, or did they fight hard because they still had their daughter to worry about? Did they stay with the resistance for a while before being hunted? Did they fight on their own, either searching for their remaining daughter or keeping their distance so as not to draw attention to her? Did Nya ask them to stay away in Ignacia just to keep her remaining family safe and alive? How do they listen to her? How do they stay away?
Nya's death. How did Maya feel? How did Ray feel, having been not as present as her? Kai seemed to take the loss better than he took Zane's, having built healthier and more effective coping mechanisms with the years. Did he blame his mother for not doing enough to protect Nya from her powers? Or was he the only one besides Ray to assure her that she'd done everything she could, that Nya made the choice herself?
What were Ray and Maya doing on the anniversary of Nya's sacrifice, when all of Ninjago was reuniting to celebrate her? Did they travel to the city because that's where she left them, or did they celebrate her from Ignacia, from her childhood home? Did they reunite with Kai? Did he travel back home to see them?
Maya sitting by the shore for hours trying to reconnect with her old element, trying to call to her daughter. Ray having to gently guide her back inside because she needs him to be stronger than her at this moment.
Kai and Nya (I know she didn't but she should've, Ray and Maya forged the blades together with their powers, she should've been a blacksmith as well) being the ones to reforge the Golden Weapons, and being the children of the elemental masters who forged the Time Blades. Did they call their parents when the cloud started spreading, to see that they were okay and to ask for their help with the forge? Had the cloud reached Ignacia by that point?
Generally, the thought of Kai and Nya calling their parents. Kai definitely does. Nya maybe not so much.
Kai going on very long phone calls with his parents and one time accidentally bringing up the fact that he never learned how to read while they were gone, and Ray and Maya wanting to set up weekly sessions in which they try to teach him on what he missed. Kai doesn't really know how to feel about it. Part of him is embarrassed, part of him is just really longing to spend time with his parents.
At which point did Nya became the resentful sibling and Kai the accepting one? Did she attempt to reconnect with their parents and failed to do so because she didn't have any memories of them, any ties to hold on to? How long did it take Kai to grapple with the idea he had of his parents before, based on his memories and based on what he believed from Krux? Did he ever apologized for what he almost did?
Did they visit their parents during the year they were off searching for Wu? Nya looks like she was around Ignacia there for a bit, and she did miss more time with her parents than Kai did because of being the youngest. Kai asking her to go, spend time with their parents, hang out with their family, while he's off searching with Zane, and Nya not really wanting to do it for herself because she's strugling to find connection with her parents, but also feeling like she has to, because there's a lot to make up for.
Nya growing her hair out after season 7. Was it to look any different from Delara? Or was it to look more like her mother? Was she attempting to form a connection there, but gave up at some point when it didn't really make her feel anything?
Maya being an overbearing parent and Ray being a chill parent, who really just sits there and listens to his kids. I bet he's a really good listener. Maya can be really attentive in the good way when she finds someone that actually wants to be taken care of.
We know Ray grew up poor, selling weapons to fend for himself, and we know Maya is somewhat knowledgeable of legends and stories about the Elemental Power of Water, as she knows the tale of Nyad. Ray growing up an orphan just like his kids and Maya growing up in a large family filled with former elemental masters who were there to teach her and guide her as she became one herself.
Why don't Ray and Maya have any family who could take care of the kids? Are they dead? Were they killed, or did they die of old age because Ray and Maya are already pretty old for parents of teenage kids? Did they purposely isolate themselves from their families? Did they not approve of their marriage?
They're the only former Elemental Masters that we know of, so they're the only living evidence that we have of what happens to somebody that used to wield such powers and now doesn't. The kids confiding to their parents about how much they fear the day when their powers no longer respond to them but to new masters, and Ray and Maya being able to comfort them with their own experiences.
This also applying to the rest of the team. Maya tells Jay about how Libber used to handle lightning, Ray tells Cole about that little girl who hung out with the Alliance and would grew up to be his mother Lilly. Nobody really knew these people like they do.
Kai and Nya going from the only ones who didn't know any family of their own to being the only ones who have a full family now, with Garmadon and Dr. Julien's death and with what we know from Jay's parenthood now. The whole team having to deal with the fact that this is not fair and it's okay to be happy for themselves and it's okay to be resentful that things are the way they are.
Some of Ray and Maya's Elemental Powers staying with them even after they've been passed off to new champions. Ray still being immune to fire and being able to touch Kai even when he's panicking and bursting into flames. Maya still being able to breathe underwater and sitting with Nya at the bottom of the swimming pool when she's upset and she just wants to sit in silence and relax, and guiding her through medition exercises.
Where did they end up after the Merge? Did Kai and Nya look for them? Are they just tired now of losing them time and time again? Are they even alive? They were already pretty old.
A lot of fanart that I see for Kai has him drawn with burn scars all over his arms or back, and it makes sense for him growing up in a blacksmith's house and taking in the profession when he was so young.
But. Hear me out. Nya with burn scars.
Kai's powers should keep him safe from severe burns for most of his life, even if they were dormant during his childhood and before his True Potential (that's at least the implication for most of the show; the only evidence I can think of the opposite is that moment in s4 when he burns himself). Nya wouldn't have that advantage, but there's no reason as to why she couldn't be working on the forge as well, focusing her craftsmanship on being a blacksmith before developing her skills to become more like an engineer. So that makes for a lot of possible accidents in her childhood in which she gets burned bad enough to scar.
It also works if you think of a younger Kai who's just gotten his powers and it's still learning to control them, accidentally leaving burning marks on the people he touches, Nya being the person that this happens to the most because she's always around him as his sister, especially on those early days when they still don't know the rest of the team that well. (This isn't necessarily for angst purposes, it could also be like a silly anecdote between them; "hey remember that time you gave me third degree burns", "I said I was sorry, Nya, please don't tell our new found mom")
Also Nya with scars on her arms and back opens up the door for a lot of buff!nya fanart dressed in tank tops and that's irrelevant of course but I think it should be mentioned anyway
