Interview with Paintbrush author Hannah Bucchin
BRITT VAN VLIET: Thank you so much for this opportunity!
HANNAH BUCCHIN: Hi Britt, thank you for taking the time to interview me! I love knowing I have readers across the globe.
B: What inspired you to write this story?
H: Paintbrush was mostly inspired by place – specifically Asheville, North Carolina and the mountains surrounding it. I currently live in Asheville, and the culture here is so unique and creative. When I was visiting the area a few years ago (before I lived here) I fell in love with the place, and the idea for my story began to form in my head.
B: Were any of the characters based on someone you know?
H: None of the characters are entirely based on anyone I know, but some of the quirks and habits were inspired by real life people.
B: Are you planning on writing another book? If you do, can you maybe give some hints what it will be about?
H: I can’t reveal too much detail now, but my current WIP takes place in a small town on the coast of Maine and follows the story of two very different sisters as they try to fix their broken relationship over the course of a summer.
B: What message do you want to give to the readers of Paintbrush?
H: When I was in high school, I felt so much pressure to decide not only what I wanted to do with the rest of my life, but also who I wanted to be. I’ve always struggled between a constant yearning for adventure and travel and a deep love for my home and family. In Paintbrush, I tried to explore how to find this balance between staying connected to your roots while still getting out of your comfort zone. I wanted to convey that you don’t necessarily have to make a choice between the two.
B: How do or did you handle the negative feedback of Paintbrush?
H: I try not to think too much about any negative feedback. Like any book, Paintbrush isn’t for everyone! I like to focus on the readers who have felt a connection with my story or characters.
B: What is your favorite (YA) book?
H: That’s a hard question – there’s so many YA books that I love. The entire Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series was so important to me growing up. More recently I’ve loved I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson and Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell.
B: I read in your About section on Goodreads that you have travelled a lot. Is there any place in the world that you still want to visit?
H: There are so many places I still want to visit! Right now South Africa, Peru, and Thailand are at the top of my list. Anywhere with good hiking trails is a place I want to be.
B: Do you have any plans to visit The Netherlands?
H: I don’t have any immediate plans to visit, but I would love to someday! I’ve always wanted to backpack around Europe, and Amsterdam is high up on my list of cities to visit.
B: What is your favorite Disney movie and why?
H: Pocahontas is my favorite Disney movie! I love the message, the music, the themes. Plus, it has a funny raccoon. So that obviously makes it the best.
B: What is the secret of love?
H: Ha! I wish I knew. Like most things, I think you just have to let yourself fall and see what happens.
