I’ve been catching up on the dub for Bleach Thousand Year Blood War and I cannot recommend enough that everyone go watch episode 8 dubbed. That’s the episode where we meet Squad Zero. During the scene where Urahara tells Ichigo to do what he thinks is right, you can hear Orihime in the background arguing with (REDACTED FOR SPOILERS) and it is really funny. They didn’t subtitle that part in the original so it’s nice to hear.
Always going to lean towards watching dubs over subs when available, and Bleach is no exception. But it's really frustrating with how lazy they've always treated Bleach's dub, despite it being one of the most popular anime in the west.
I mean, both Naruto and Boruto get union dubs, while Bleach has always been non-union, even TYBW, despite it being picked up for streaming by Disney of all things (granted, I doubt Disney actually pays for anything; they just bought the streaming rights, but still).
Because of it, we get all these recasts and lazy double-casting. Half the captains have new voices (and not just because of understandable reasons like actors retiring), and we already have actors playing multiple Stern Ritter (including Bambi and Meni both being played by the same person for some reason).
And they don't even bother to look up how to pronounce stuff like Wandenreich and Yhwach correctly.
Hearing new actors for Shinji and Ukitake especially is deflating. And they apparently never even contacted David Lodge to come back as Zaraki despite him constantly tweeting that he would 100% come back even for shit pay just for the fans.
Some actors not coming back is expected, like Laura Bailey (though that also speaks to other issues regarding how shittily anime dubbing is viewed), but a few of these were completely avoidable if they just bothered to not be so cheap with things.
Idk, I still think the dub's good in general, and I love hearing JYB as Ichigo again, but some of this feels like stuff that was excusable back in the mid-2000s, but not anymore. There's no real excuse for them to be going non-union and being lazy here.
I don't want to be a conspiracy theorist but I'm looking over at the fact that there's no Bleach dub...
...is it because of the strike? Is that influencing Bleach's studio but not, say, Dandadan?
Not me blushing so hard like a junior high teenager the moment I heard the local dub voice of Uryuu again. Dang, I don't remember crushing on his "handsome voice" like this back then
What is this fucking dub???
Rukia: Bakudo #33: PALE FIRE CRASH!
*attack hits but does zero damage*
Rukia: No way, my attack had no effect
Me: BECAUSE THE ATTACK IS CALLED SOKATSUI!!
Am I the only one who prefers the Bleach dub more?
I know most people are into the subbed version or the mangastream/mangareader/mangapanda translations but to me I will always prefer the dub and the Viz Media translations.
I think JYB’s Ichigo is better than Morita’s. Not saying Morita is bad but I like JYB more since he sounds like an actual teen but still a strong one.
Stephanie Sheh’s Orihime really fits as Orihime matures more in the Arrancar arc to now. Hell the Fullbring arc really showed me how much Stephanie did a good job as Orihime as if she was growing up inside the character.
I think Ulquiorra’s dub voice fits better because I like how Tony Oliver is Puerto Rican and he can say Spanish words really well more than the Japanese doe.
Anyways, I’m saying this just to see more dub support. I’m one of those very few people who loves dubs more than subs. Not saying subs are bad because I prefer dubbed anime when it is done good and Viz really did a good job.
