I just had a brainstorm, inspired by this shot, which I am sure you will recognize from the Alones OP:

Now, I absolutely do not want to slander the 5 Lifetimes speech, I love the 5 Lifetimes speech, but I have always found the circumstances to be a little...I dunno, high-concept? Over-engineered? The part where Ulquiorra makes her invisible and intangible, and she has twelve hours to say goodbye to one person.

Anyway, it occurred to me from the shot above, where it looks like she's passing directly through Ichigo, that she's like a ghost. And my next thought was, I bet the Kubo had that scenario planned from the pilot concept, where Orihime was dead. I mean, he already re-used the story of Orihime's ghost-father attacking her, re-mixing it to be her brother and so she didn't die, and I made a post a while ago about how Pilot!Ichigo and Orihime saying their goodbyes resembled Rukia and Renji's parting. The pilot ends with Rukia ostensibly taking Orihime to Soul Society, and then, revealing to the audience (but not Ichigo) that she can't actually go back, so they have to stick around the Living World for a while. Who knows what Kubo had in mind to happen next, but I can definitely imagine Ghost!Orihime wandering around town, invisible and intangible, and talking to Ichigo in his sleep about how much she wanted to live.

Woke up this morning and remembered that Ichigo had to watch Orihime's soul drift away in the Bleach pilot and it resulted in me sobbing in my pillow before hurriedly get ready for work

Ichigo obviously has a crush on Orihime in the pilot, don't you dare fight this truth, and he sees that crush separated from her body, being attacked by her father turned hollow, then gets the confirmation his crush was mutual, but is stopped before he can confess because what good could it be? so he has to watch her go to the Soul Society in silence and it's just absolutely angsty

Bleach Returns 2024 - Day 6 - In Another Life

Bleach Pilot, but it goes on long enough for Renji to show up and find out the his girlfriend captain's sister is now only three apples tall

I know that the pilot was just a prototype and was not meant to have an impact in the main series but still, the fact that in the first ever Bleach work Tite Kubo had Ichigo and Orihime have a crush on each other and Rukia shipping them was just... PERFECT.
