I found a bit of video footage. That I then proceeded to turn into animated gifs. Which didn’t work on Tumblr because they were too large. So then I proceeded to just share the little extra footage I had via means that I was already familiar with: video. Hence, I give you a cute little video about Serenity’s dress. And GIFs. Though the GIFs are outside of Tumblr because I am completely inept:
“Palladium” / “Il Palladio” dress. Designed by Gianfranco Ferre. Included in the Christian Dior Spring-Summer 1992 “Haute Couture” collection. Previous posts about this prettiful dress:
The dress is obviously meant to look like a Ionic column, with the round sleeves containing the spiral design typical to the Greek order’s capital, and the plisse fabric is the shaft of the column. There’s also gold to represent the base, but that never made it into Serenity’s dress. The plisse fabric fits the “column” theme very well but I’m glad that Naoko decided to go with something huge and flowy instead - it usually helps in giving the princess an air of elegance and femininity. The manga version of Serenity’s clothing is almost identical to the one in the video and the images. The anime one was extremely simplified however - the capital design is almost completely gone, the round shapes at the top are turned into gold circles, and the sleeves are no longer sleeves but more like white round balls magically stuck to her shoulders. Below are some images that compare Ionic columns with the Palladium dress, the Palladium dress to Serenity’s manga dress, and the manga dress to the anime dress. You might wanna right click on these and click on “view image” or “open image in new tab”, to see the details… Also, I hope the images work; they won’t show up in the post’s preview but they’re working just fine in the actual post edit. Hm.

The column is obviously sectioned, for proportion-related reasons

Column, dress and the mademoiselles. Basically a progression of the “evolution” of the style. I wonder what changes the new anime is going to bring to her outfit…
And that, my dears, is how you prove that you are batshit crazy: by making a more or less detailed study of a dress that a manga/anime character wears :)).
Well… maybe it’s interesting trivia for some; or will help others make nice cosplay dresses :).
Many thanks to Sailor Moon Obsession for finding the dress and the video and sharing with the rest of us.
