new Paper Mario/Mario Story scenery (NSMB2 based)
To get my creative juices going again after the holidays, rather than another square-based data stage, I decided to try something else. Namely, a test for the future (and futureproofing)...
I made a little village, using recreated assets from one of the general Mario game's opening worlds. In this case, New Super Mario Bros 2's many World 1 features (striped plains, zigzag striped hills, trees, and other items) were made from scratch, since that one has more going for it than most of the other World 1's of the New Soup series.
Also included are some mushroom houses, in 3 of 5 colors (and I have all 5 colors made). However, those mushroom fellows aren't the only citizens of this town (with intentions to make more fitting abodes for other species in the future)...
A Green Koopa is eager to jump into the only Green Pipe in the village, with his green Toad pal catching up! Meanwhile, a green-er Toad has a lovely chat with a local Lochlady.
Nearby, two Koopas are having a VERY quick race, with a lovely Lochlady refereeing! Who will win this half-second sprint?!
Things aren't all happy in this island village, however. One Toad seems super blue, worrying his less blue pal...
To literally brighter pastures, Mario and Captain T Ode mull over what some of the locals are telling them, right near the port.
As a bonus render, due to a...mistake early on, I made New Super Mario Bros 1's more floral grass pattern instead of NSMB2's. While it doesn't quite match the other scenery, here it is anyway for a relatively quick comparison.

More Paper Mario/Mario Story scenery based on NSMB2
Following up from my previous post is another one, this time based on New Super Mario Bros 2's World 2 desert. All props and textures were personally recreated with photo reference.
A scenic view of the formerly abandoned ruins. However, it seems some unsavory characters and wildlife have since claimed it!
Mario, Parakarry the Paratroopa, and Edwin the Slurple engage in battle with a Sombrero guy and his Panser girlfriends! While Mario's side will spank the quartet, you gotta wonder like those Pokeys and Clefts are...how did that Sombrero Guy get himself three gals?
The town is heavily surveilled by a large number of Bandits! ...except those two, since apparently the Red Bandit told the green one a dirty joke.
No characters in this shot. I just wanted to show more of the recreated totems and the pyramid.
Amendment to Origami King Retold Great Velika Sea progress report
Since the last update, I pretty much added the missing stuff I felt would be needed for new scenes featuring the vessel:
The blue stripe on the boat's middle cabin is closer to the original coloration.
Some extra items have been placed inside the middle cabin.
Nonspecific rock formations have been added. I know I said nonspecific islands, but it occurred to me upon review that the OG game's sea scenes didn't really have islands in them, either. I may also change the number of rocks and diverge their shapes more when it comes time to make screenshots.
Most important, a version of Captain T Ode's Super Marino sub has been created! This was slightly tougher to do than the main boat, and it's not 1:1, but it's pretty close.
The only real change that isn't due to a difference in skill level or numbers is that the left side of the back fin has a Sprixie symbol. This change was done to reflect them being present in Shangri-Spa in TOK Retold.
