Yesterday was a day of fulfilling commitments. The day was tuff, yet very rewarding. As the day began to come to an end I realized I had not fulfilled a commitment to myself to train. I was tired, hungry, and had 100 excuses. While I was running I came to another realization. The time consider how I feel about something is when the decision is being made, when I am contemplating the commitment. However once the decision is made, and the commitment has been solidified the option to do it or not is no longer an option. My feelings about the commitment are irrelevant.... Empathy..... One of the most simple and difficult things. I truly believe that some people are just born with this gift, some have to work really hard at growing this capacity. Earlier this week I felt myself get defensive when questioned. It’s a natural and expected response right? I wanted to know why I felt that way... I considered the things that lead up to the conversation. I considered the other persons perspective. See it’s not about being right or wrong. It’s about learning and growing in real time from the experience. Here is what I learned from that... While I believe myself to be a great communicator, when I do not consider how or what the either person actually heard me say. Then I am not setting clear expectations for either of us. As a leader I must be clear, consistent and confident. Ask what the other person heard... not if they understand.
