her lip is bleeding (half her body’s bleeding, actually); she’s got a black eye and torn clothes: if you ask her, this is the look of victory, and a fight that just earned her about one grand, cash. nevermind the blood on her clothes: tonight, she’s celebrating. still, prying eyes have never been her favorite. “hey, didn’t mama teach you it’s rude to stare? c’mon, dude. it’s just blood”.
Roxanne bit her lip, staring down into the pale yellow champagne bubbles. “Not really one for big parties like this,” she murmurs sheepishly. The bright lights hurt her eyes and she was never one for jazz music. She clears her throat and begins to circle the rim of the glass with her fingertip, refusing to make eye contact. “Who were you invited here by?”
A nervous smile flutters across her face. “Mmh. Somethin’ tells me you’re not just here for booze.” She shakes her head and pops her lips before giving a Jack Daniels infused shrug. “Call it a gut feelin’.”
MEME. → { CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT QUESTIONS: HARD MODE. }STATUS. → ACCEPTING + open to everyone! @blindwrath
1. Does your character have siblings or family members in their age group? Which one are they closest with?
Sadly, Ava does not have any siblings. She does have cousins on either side of her family in her age group, but she rarely sees them, due to the fact that her family moved around so much. She’s not overly close with any of them, to be honest. Also, the Daines and Liang families have a long history of sibling rivalry so….every time they see each other, they engage in a pissing contest.
Sometimes, I toy with the idea of her having a brother, but that would have to be an au setting. I do have an au with @fromaspecialbloodline in which Ava and Anna are twin sisters. It’s great, because I get to explore what Ava would be like if she had a sibling, but also sad because we decided to be cruel and have Anna grow up in the hellhole that was Ava’s childhood. Thankfully, they had each other to get through it.
3. What is/was your character’s relationship with their father like?
Ava’s relationship with Richard wasn’t great. I feel as if I say this all the time but Ava’s parents weren’t really parents. They were more like drill sergeants and were often extremely cold to her—a practice that was his idea to begin with once she showed signs of having the leadership trait.
He was extremely proud of having a child with that trait—he called his siblings and bragged about it constantly—and wasn’t really concerned about forging a proper relationship with his daughter. In his mind, nature had chosen him to create and raise this child for a reason. If she was to lead the charge against the supernatural, she had to be the best weapon she could. Anything less would have been an abomination, an insult to their kind. So, that’s what he focused on until she ‘died.’
He definitely blames himself for Ava’s ‘death.’ If he hadn’t have been so careless or pushed their group to go on the mission in the first place, she wouldn’t have had to sacrifice her life to save his. His selfishness cost them their leader, and he’s never been able to forgive himself for that.
16. Which does your character idealize most: happiness or success?
Success. Happiness isn’t something that Ava believes that she deserves, or will maintain for a long period of time, so she just puts most of her energy in becoming a better hunter so that she can fulfill her duty—ridding the world of all evil supernatural creatures. Naturally, that’s going to take quite awhile, but she’s up for the challenge!
17. What was your character’s favorite toy as a child?
A Chinese yo-yo (also known as a diabolo) that her grandmother got her when she was 4. She could play with it for hours, tbh. Of course, her parents wouldn’t allow that, so she just played with it after they went to bed. Her grandmother used to teach her tricks!
Second place were these awesome Chinese wood puzzles called Kongming locks. They come assembled but when you take them apart, they’re very difficult to put back together. Every time her grandmother came to visit, she brought Ava a new puzzle. She loved them.
MEME. → { DETAILED OC HEADCANON MEME. }STATUS. → ACCEPTING ( i love this meme so much! ) + open to everyone! @blindwrathThis is under a read more because it’s a really long answer!
4. What is their relationship with their parents? What’s a good and bad memory with them? Did they know both parents?
Short answer: she doesn’t have one. Long answer: She doesn’t have one because if her parents found out that she was alive (and a hybrid at that), they would try to kill her. Hunters go by a strict code (which should be familiar to quite a few of you): if you’re turned by a supernatural, you must commit suicide. It doesn’t matter that Ava is their daughter. If anything, that makes things worse. Her parents have always been very strict followers of the code, in fact, just to drive it home, Ava’s first kill was a former group member that got turned into a vampire. Plus, Ava was a leader. By default, she was held to a much higher standard. Her choice to live would be seen as cowardly, the ultimate betrayal to her people.
I wish I could say that they would feel remorse for trying to kill their daughter, but the moment that they find out that Ava is half-vampire, any affection they have towards her would be gone. She would mean absolutely nothing to them. They would be ashamed to have given birth to her—and in my head, if/when they do meet their daughter again, they would tell her, to her face, that if they had known that this was how she would have turned out, they would have killed her sooner. Both the Daineses and the Liangs (Ava’s mother’s maiden name) are prominent families. Ava being alive spoils their legacy and ruins their reputation—and they can’t have that.
Even before she became a hybrid, Ava’s parents did not treat her well. They were very, very cold to her, as Richard (her father) believed that providing any sort of affection or care towards her would make her soft, and softness does not make great leaders. They were extremely hard on her—more like trainers/coaches than actual parents.
The only good memories she has with them are these tender moments they would have after really tough battles where Ava’s mother would put an arm around her shoulders and her father would just nod and look at her tenderly. It was these that kept Ava going, despite her rough treatment, convincing her that they truly cared for her—they were just preparing her for the future. She was sure that once she actually came into power as a leader that they would cut her some slack and be more affectionate towards her. Sadly, had she not been taken, she would have found out that wouldn’t be the case. If anything, they’d be harder on her.
10. Do they like children? Do children like them? Do they have or want any children? What would they be like as a parent? Or as a godparent/babysitter/ect?
Ava does like kids, as long as they’re nice. She’s not a fan of asshole (read: rude) children. She will most likely scare them or be rude to them in return.
She does have children. Two with @wiickedmagic and three with @magicparasite in two AU verses. She’s actually a really good mom, a bit overprotective, but good. Her childhood was a masterclass in bad parenting, so she does everything she can to prevent her children from experiencing even a hint of it. This doesn’t mean that she’s a pushover, Ava has no problem being the disciplinarian. She’s not in the business of raising assholes.
I don’t believe that having children would be something she’d even consider until she’s faced with it (in other words, if she accidentally gets pregnant), but in most situations, I think she’d keep the child.
Ava wouldn’t enjoy being a babysitter or a godparent unless she already had a child of her own. You’d have to twist her arm to get her to do either job—and it may cost you quite a bit financially as well.
40. Do they like energy drinks? Coffee? Sugary food? Or can they naturally stay awake and alert?
Energy drinks aren’t Ava’s cup of tea, but she is a fan of coffee (black, sometimes with sugar), and sugary food. She likes them more for the taste than the energy boost—plus, she doesn’t really need it, since she’s usually full of energy, regardless. If you wanna get on her good side, get her chocolate (lots of it) and donuts (but no filling, unless it’s chocolate, she thinks that jelly donuts are a crime against humanity).
41. What’s their sexuality? What do they find attractive? Physically and mentally? What do they like/need in a relationship?
Ava’s sexuality is…complicated. The closest labels that fit her are gray-a and greyromantic. She doesn’t experience sexual or romantic attraction a lot, so when it does happen, it can be kind of a big deal, depending on the intensity. Most of the time, any attraction she feels isn’t enough to seek out the person/develop romantic feelings/jump-start her sex drive.
However, (and this is usually the case with ships) there can be times when her feelings are too strong for her to ignore. Of course, this doesn’t stop her from suppressing them—which she will do, every time, until the tension boils over. But, even when it does, it still might not be enough for her to have sex—click here for the reason why (scroll down to the fifth and final headcanon).
Ava likes to think that she’s beyond sexual and romantic attraction—and it’s not necessarily a lie. She can go for the rest of her life without having sex, wanting (a significant amount of) affection, yearning for a romantic partner, etc. Hunting the supernatural and saving lives is usually than enough to sustain her throughout her expansive lifetime. I say usually because Ava has ships.
It’s hard to say what Ava finds attractive because attraction happens so infrequently! From what I can tell, she likes her men (and women, if you’re @wiickedmagic and @exaltruist <3) tall and dark-haired. She also likes people that can hold their own or show strength/aggression of some kind (not towards her, unless they’re sparring). Mentally, she likes people that are smart and witty—anyone she can verbally spar with for long periods of time. Having a dark side doesn’t hurt either.
In terms of what she likes/needs—she’d probably say (after mulling this over for at least a week or so, as this isn’t a topic that she thinks about) that she’d like someone who can handle her independence/her in general. They can’t be too needy, or too mushy. Challenging her in some way is also nice—and being funny, too. Ultimately, the best thing for anyone who’s interested in her to do is to show her kindness and love—sounds hokey, I know. She’ll resist at first, but over time, she’ll relax into it if the person is patient enough. Ava is a piece of work, but I’ve found that when she loves, she loves hard. She’s the best person to have by your side.
